Jack Houston Higgins
Jack Houston Higgins, 80, of Clemmons passed away on Tuesday, August 17, 2010 at Brookstone Terrace. He was born July 12, 1930 in Grayson Co. VA to Carl Jackson and Violet Edwards Higgins. Mr. Higgins was co owner of Bingham Lumber Co. and a member of Clemmons United Methodist Church. He was a former Chief Officer of Clemmons Fire Department and Past President of Clemmons Civic Club. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean Conflict. Surviving is his wife of 56 years, Betty Higgins; a daughter, Cynthia Downs and husband, Rick of Charlotte; two sons, Brent Higgins and Adam Higgins and wife, Jamie, all of Clemmons; three grandchildren, Houston and Cheyenne Downs and Noah Higgins. He is also survived by his twin sister, June Smith of Martinsville, VA. A Funeral Service was held at 2 p.m. Friday, August 20, 2010 at Clemmons United Methodist Church with the Rev. Mark Portis officiating. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory with military honors. The family received friends from 12:30 p.m. until 2 p.m. at the Church. Clyde Bovender
Mr. Clyde Bovender, 71, died Wednesday, August 18, 2010. He was the son of the late Della and Charles Bovender; and the brother of the late Coy Bovender, C. A. Bovender, Curtis Bovender; and Opal B. Shouse. Clyde is survived by his wife, Opal; one stepson, Grady Click and wife, Pam; two step granddaughters, Kelli Rosson and Nicole Click; two step great-grandchildren: Robbie and Brooklynn of Hickory, NC; three brothers: Chester Bovender and wife, Frances, Leroy Bovender and wife, Shirley, Carl Bovender and wife, Sandra, all of Winston-Salem; two sisters: Irene Cheek and husband, Bobby, and Carol Spaugh, all of Clemmons; two sisters-in-law, Fran Bovender of Winston-Salem and Ruth Church of Kernersville; and many nieces and nephews who loved their “Uncle Clyde”. A Memorial Service for Clyde was held Saturday, August 21, at Salem Funeral Home Main Street Chapel with the Rev. William Campbell officiating. The family received friends following the service. Robert Ryan Carter
Mr. Robert Ryan Carter, 53, passed away Thursday, August 19, 2010 at the Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born December 25, 1956 in Forsyth County to the late George Amos and Ruby Hayes Carter. Robert was employed with L&R Transmissions for the last 20 years. He was an avid race fan and crew member. Robert was a loving husband, father, and friend to all who knew him. Surviving is his wife of 30 years, Donna H. Carter; daughter, Crystal Carter; and a son, Jamey Carter; also surviving are two half-sisters, Teresa LaRosa and Rusty Whitehead. A Graveside Service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2010 at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons with the Rev. Ken Furches officiating. The family received friends Sunday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Christina “Chrissy” Ayers Hodges, age 32, of Clemmons passed away Monday, August 16, 2010 at her home. A memorial service was held Thursday, August 19, 2010 at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel, with Pastor Rob Decker officiating. The family will receive friends at Davidson Funeral Home, Hickory Tree Chapel from 6:00 p.m. until 8:00 p.m. on Wednesday, August 18, 2010. Chrissy was born May 2, 1978 in Forsyth County to Grady Wilson Ayers Sr. and Peatie Minton Ayers. She was a registered nurse at High Point Regional Hospital. She was preceded in death by her brother: Grady Wilson Ayers Jr. and her grandmother Avalean Ayers. A loving wife and loved by many and will be missed by all. Surviving are her husband Michael Shane Hodges of Clemmons, her parents; Grady Wilson Ayers Sr. and Peatie Minton Ayers, her sister; Dawn Melton and husband Timothy of Kernersville. Her grandfather: Robey Wilson Ayers of Winston Salem, her grandparents; Reba Harrison and husband Andy of Little River. Her mother and father-in-law; Dennis Hodges and wife Angela of Winston Salem, brother-inlaw; Dustin Hodges and wife Jennifer of Winston Salem. Her nieces; Casey Melton and Maris Melton. Hazel Andrews Jones
Mrs. Hazel Andrews Jones (widower of Ralph O. Jones Sr.) age 79, passed away Friday morning, August 20, 2010. Hazel was born in Allegany Co. on January 8, 1931 to the late Claude and Nora Sadler Andrews. She is survived by two sons Ralph O. Jones, Jr. and William Roger Jones and wife, Debra; a daughter Deborah Sweat; three grandchildren, Crystal Sweat, Matthew (Megan) Jones, and Mark (Ariel) Jones; two great-grandchildren, Haleigh and David; two sisters, Kay Fresconi and Betty (James) Mitchell; and numerous nieces, nephews, and extended family. A Graveside Service was held at 11 a.m. Monday, August 23, 2010 at Crouse Cemetery in Sparta, NC with Pastor Don Jones and Mark Jones officiating. Marvin Alexander
“Alex” McSwain
Marvin Alexander “Alex” McSwain, 37, died unexpectedly at his home on Monday, August 16, 2010. Alex was preceded in death by his grandparents, George Lewis McSwain Sr., Hazel Sherrill Lanier, Marvin Brown Alexander and Eula Davidson Alexander; as well as his beloved dogs, “Mack” and “Brandy”. Alex is survived by his parents, George Lewis and Brenda Alexander McSwain; siblings, Sherrill McSwain Underwood, George L. (Trey) McSwain III and his wife, Lisa Stoakley McSwain; a very special niece, Kailey McSwain, as well as very special nephews, Ryan McSwain and Davis Underwood. Alex was a graduate of R. J. Reynolds High School and an honor graduate of Appalachian State University. He enjoyed many activities and had many talents, including playing and listening to live music, fishing, skiing, canoeing and kayaking. Alex was an avid supporter of Appalachian State football. He especially enjoyed spending time with his niece and nephews. A Celebration of his Life was held on Friday, August 20, at Pine Grove United Methodist Church, 1130 Jonestown Road, with the Reverend Steve Martin officiating. The family received friends Thursday, August 19 at Salem Funeral Home, 120 South Main St., Winston-Salem and after the Service on Friday. Memorials may be made to the Humane Society of Forsyth County or to the charity of the donor’s choice.
Larry Gordon Smith
Mr. Larry Gordon Smith, 53, of Clemmons, passed away Tuesday, August 17, 2010. Mr. Smith was born in Alexandria, VA to Claude Pierce and Hilda Gordon Smith on May 18, 1957. He was preceded in death by his father. Mr. Smith is survived by his mother; a son, Mahlon Smith of GA; two sisters, Patty Harper and husband, Jasper of Clemmons and Dianna Prather and husband, Russell of Rural Hall; a brother, Claude Pierce Smith, Jr. and wife, Brenda of Clemmons; and numerous nieces and nephews. A gathering of friends and family took place on Saturday, August 21, 2010 at Hayworth-Miller Kinderton Chapel.
Elizabeth Joann Wrights
Mrs. Elizabeth Joann Wrights, 70, of Clemmons passed away on Thursday, August 19, 2010. She was born in Forsyth County to Arthur and Fannie Lillian Adams McClamrock. Mrs. Wrights had a love for arts and crafts. She took pride in her crafts and lovingly gave them to family and friends. In addition to her parents, Mrs. Wrights, was preceded in death by her husband, Roy F. Wrights; and brother, A.T. McClamrock, Jr. Those left to cherish her memory include a sister, Nancy Louise Tesh (Jerry); aunt, Jo Hege; nephews, A.T. McClamrock III (Tootie), Billy Tesh (Linda), David McClamrock (Donna), Jonathan Tesh; numerous other nieces and nephews; sister-in-law, Dot McClamrock; and a very special sister-in-law, Lucille Wood. A Graveside Celebration was held on Monday, August 23, 2010, 3 p.m., at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family received friends on Sunday, August 22, 2010, at Vogler and Sons Clemmons Chapel.
