1,000 blue flamingos ‘flock’ here

Blue flamingos flocking gracefully on the front lawn of the Broyhill Center in Clemmons? It wasn’t the cold snap that turned the long-necked waders — usually pink — blue. They started flocking last week, and if organizers have their way, there will be a thousand of the not-a-color-found-in-nature flamingoes on the lawn by April 12. Ovarian cancer survivors Jean Ebert and Charlotte Ruth wanted to do something to fight the disease that’s ranked as the fifth cause of cancer-related deaths among women. The “No to O” cause was born.
Organizers have put the flamingos up for adoption in advance of a night of music and dancing at the Broyhill Center April 12. Flamingoes — they’re teal not blue, organizers say — can be sponsored for $20 each. The nonprofit No to Ovarian Cancer organization plans to support early detection, education and help cancer survivors improve their quality of life. Flamingoes can be adopted on line at www.notoo.org.
