Harry Bynum Rogers, Jr.

Harry Bynum Rogers, Jr. went to be home with God on April 9, 2016 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. Bynum was born March 11, 1923 in Winston-Salem, NC to Harry and Wessie Rogers. He graduated from Gray High School. Bynum worked for Western Electric through the company’s transitions to AT&T and then Lucent Technologies, where he retired after 35 years of service. He was a long time member of Central Terrace United Methodist Church, where he married Mary Beck. They enjoyed a marriage of 66 years. They traveled with their family and friends, and even went to Hawaii for a very memorable anniversary trip. He was an avid fan at his grandchilden’s sports activities through the years. Bynum recently celebrated his 93rd birthday with all his friends and family, enjoying cake, music and dancing at his home at Creekside Terrace Independent Living community, where he was a resident ambassador for over two years. A World War II veteran in the 2nd Calvary division of Patton’s 3rd Army, Bynum was proud to serve his country. He received 5 battle stars, and was awarded a Purple Heart for wounds received in the line of duty. He saw action in Normandy and at the Battle of the Bulge. His family is so proud of his legacy. Bynum was a hero, and a part of history that guaranteed America’s freedom as well as the freedom of allied countries. Bynum was on the Triad Flight of Honor Trip October 28, 2009. Visiting the WWII Memorial was a very rewarding and memorable experience which he spoke about often. Harry Bynum Rogers, Jr. is survived by his children Trish Adams (Larry), Rick Rogers, Mike Rogers (Betty), Alyce Rogers and Bryan Rogers (Louanne); his grandchildren, Christopher Watts (Shannon), Heather Watts Baccus (Jeff), Josh Wray (Lindsay), Michael Wray (Megan), and Christopher Rogers. His great grandchildren, Cooper and Mason Baccus, Brandon and Mason Sargent, Logan, Paige and Madyson Wray. He is also survived by Millie Daniels, a close companion and dance partner for the last few years of his life. A funeral service was held on Wednesday, April 13, 2016 at Ardmore Baptist Church with Reverend Don Gordon officiating. Burial with full military honors followed at Parklawn Memorial Gardens. Leroy Francis Fussell

WINSTON-SALEM — Mr. Leroy Francis Fussell, 89, passed away Friday, April 8, 2016. He was born in Forsyth County on June 29, 1926 to the late Leroy Jefferson and Millie Curry Fussell. Mr. Fussell retired from R.J. Reynolds Tobacco Co. with 39 years of service in the Leaf Department. He was a faithful member of Pinedale Christian Church. Over the many years at the church, he served as Choir Director, Deacon, Treasurer, and sang in a Male Quartet. Surviving is his wife of 68 years, Bettie Norris Fussell; son, Horace James “Jim” Fussell and wife Judy of Clemmons; three daughters, Rebecca Lynn “Beckie” Fussell of Winston-Salem, Gloria Fussell Caudill and husband Tom of Bermuda Run, and Melissa Fussell Lefebvre and husband Dean of Lexington; four grandchildren, Matthew Fussell and wife Ali, Brooke Everhart and husband Brad, Jonathan Caudill, and Savannah Lefebvre; four great-grandchildren, Ryan, Avery, Elsie, and Luke; also surviving is his brother, Thurmond Fussell and wife Phyllis of Winston-Salem. A funeral service was held Tuesday, April 12, 2016 at Pinedale Christian Church with Pastor Bill McKenzie and Pastor Bob McCaskill officiating. Burial followed at Woodland Cemetery. Melba Jean Beauchamp April 25, 1940 – April 6, 2016 Melba Jean Beauchamp, 75, passed away peacefully April 6, 2016, surrounded by her loving family and friends. Melba was born April 25, 1940 in West Virginia, to the late Harold M. Shaw and Lydia Mae Shaw. She was also preceded in death by her brother, Harold M. Shaw, Jr. Melba’s happy place was her beach house at Pirateland in Myrtle Beach, SC. Melba worked as the director at Immanuel Baptist Day Care for many years and worked at the K&W Cafeteria until her retirement. She is survived by her husband, Ronnie Beauchamp; sons, Terry Beauchamp and Dean Beauchamp (Donna); sister, Linda Knight (Terry); three grandchildren: Amanda Johnson (Eric), Tyler Beauchamp (Ashley), and Emily Beauchamp all of Winston-Salem; three great-grandchildren: Cooper, Kinston, and Channing; two sisters-in-law, Diane Manuel and Shirleen Benson; and many special friends. She was a longtime member of Immanuel Baptist Church in Clemmons. A memorial service was held Sunday, April 10, 2016 at the church.

Florence E. Todd Leagans

Mrs. Florence E. Todd Leagans, 90, of Winston-Salem died peacefully April 2, 2016 Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born September 20, 1925 in Forsyth County, the daughter of the late Rufus F. and Nora Spaugh Todd. Florence was a lifelong member of Bethel United Methodist Church where she cared for many children during services in her 23 years of nursery care. She retired from Western Electric, or Lucent Technologies, after 25 years of service. Her last years of life were at Brookdale Senior Care Service where she was loved by all. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her husband of 63 years, Joe T. Leagans; a daughter, Phyllis Green; four brothers, Clifford Todd, Arthur Todd, Fred Todd and Allen Todd; and four sisters, Cora Moody, Mary Forest, Hazel Scott and Helen Grubbs. Survivors include four children, Cheryl Mahan, Joe Mark Leagans, Bruce Leagans and Cynthia Cleary and husband, Jerry; three grandchildren, Chris Green, Jarrod Cleary and Katie Leagans; and one great grandchild, Dawson Cleary; two brothers, Curtis L. Todd and Theodore “Tedd” Todd; two sisters, Wilma Lanning and Virginia Scott. The funeral service were conducted last Tuesday at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Entombment followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory Mausoleum in Clemmons. Russell James Shew Sr.

April 23, 1932 – April 3, 2016

Mr. Russell James Shew Sr., 83, of Lewisville, passed away Sunday, April 3, 2016 at his home. He was born in Wilkes County to Tom and Emma Pennell Shew. He was a vegetable gardener and loved being outdoors. He was an avid baseball fan especially the Atlanta Braves. Mr. Shew served in the U.S. Navy from 1950 to 1955 and was a veteran of the Korean War. Mr. Shew was preceded in death by four brothers and two sisters. He is survived by his wife of 65 years, Delores Green Shew, of the home, two sons Russell and wife Patti Shew, Jr and Randy Shew of Clemmons. A grandson Christopher Shew and a granddaughter Andrea Sheppherd, a great-granddaughter Hunter Shew, two brothers Tommy Shew and Johnny Shew both of Wilkes County, and a sister Lynda Branson of Kentucky. Funeral services were conducted Friday, April 8, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel. Burial followed in the Salisbury National Cemetery in Salisbury, NC, with full military honors conducted by the VFW Memorial Honor Guard.

Robert “Bob” Barker McFadden

Aug. 18, 1929-March 31, 2016

Robert “Bob” Barker McFadden, 86, died of natural causes the evening of the 31st of March, 2016 at his home in Bermuda Run, NC. He was preceded in death by his wife, Marlys Staberg McFadden and his brother, Ivan Marion McFadden, Jr. He is survived by his three children, Kathleen McFadden Myers of Charlottesville, VA, Jeffrey Robert McFadden and wife Christine Bramel McFadden of Winston-Salem, NC, and Melissa McFadden Dell and husband Bruce Fox Dell of Port Republic, MD. Also surviving are his five grandchildren, Robert Gayle Nunn IV and Melissa McFadden Nunn, Andrew Robert McFadden and Allison Christine McFadden and Bruce Robertson McFadden Dell. Bob was the son of the late Ivan Marion McFadden Sr. and Gladys Barker McFadden of Mount Vernon, IN. Bob retired in 1992 after 25 years of service with McCormick & Co. Inc. where he served as Executive Vice President, Corporate Operations. He served on the McCormick Board of Directors for 14 years and was a member of the Executive Committee of the Board of Directors for about 4 years. He was certified as a Senior Professional in Human Resources and was a guest lecturer at the U.S. Air Force Professional Personnel Management Program at the Air College at Maxwell Air Force Base. He graduated from the University of Louisville in 1951 with a B.S. in Business Administration and completed the Harvard Business School Managing Organizational Change program. Bob served in the U.S. Air Force during the Korean War as a rated officer. He later served in the Minnesota Air National Guard as a Captain in an all-weather fighter squadron. He was active in civic affairs and in higher education as Chairman of the Voluntary Council for Equal Opportunity and as a member of the Board of Visitors for the University of Maryland, Lenoir-Rhyne College in North Carolina and Towson University in Maryland. Bob was a Trustee of Franklin Square Hospital, Baltimore, MD. He was active in the Adult Literacy Foundation as a founding Board member. He was also a member of the Center Club of Baltimore, MD and the Sea Pines Country Club of Hilton Head, SC. Bob grew up in Louisville, KY, and met his wife, Marlys, while stationed in Minneapolis, MN. He and Marlys lived in Maryland for 30 years and maintained another home on Hilton Head Island, SC before moving to Bermuda Run, NC in 2007. As a resident of Hilton Head, Bob was active in the Learning Exchange at the University of South Carolina Beaufort, serving as Vice President for the Hilton Head area. He was also a Director of Hospice Care of the Lowcountry. Bob was also active in his church, Providence Presbyterian, serving on the Mission Ministry and Adult Education Ministry. After relocating to North Carolina, he tutored children for El Buen Pastor and served as an Elder at Shallowford Presbyterian Church. Memorial Services were held on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Shallowford Presbyterian Church, Lewisville, NC., with interment to follow in the church columbarium.

James Donald Williams Sr.

June 28, 1933 – April 9, 2016

Mr. James Donald Williams Sr., 82, of Clemmons, passed away on Saturday, April 9, 2016 at Brookridge Retirement Community. He was born on June 28, 1933 in Forsyth County to Vallie Hancock Williams and Richard John Williams. Mr. Williams served in the U.S. Army and retired from McLean Trucking Company after 28 years of service. Don was a Christian man who spent his life serving others. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather and friend who will be greatly missed. Don was preceded in death by his wife, Shirley Flynn Williams and his daughter, Donna Leigh Williams. Surviving are one son, Jim Williams (wife Keri) of Lexington; two grandchildren, Benjamin Williams of Winston-Salem and Kaci Long (husband Will) of Winston-Salem. Also surviving are nieces, nephews, cousins, many friends and longtime neighbors. A funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Saturday, April 16, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. James C. Newsome, Jr. officiating. Interment will follow in Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6-8 p.m. Friday, April 15, 2016 at the funeral home. Hazel Gregory Stevenson

Mrs. Hazel Gregory Stevenson, 86, of Clemmons, passed away Thursday, April 7, 2016 at Forsyth Medical Center. She was born on January 21, 1930 in Davie County to Flora Gregory and William Edward Baity. Mrs. Stevenson was a lifelong member of Clemmons First Baptist Church and retired from Hanes Knitting. She was preceded in death by her parents; first husband, Carl Gregory; brother, Wade Baity; half-brother, Calvin Baity; two sisters, Vatra Tranthum and Cleo Everidge. She is survived by her husband, Charles Stevenson; step-son, Adrian Stevenson; step-daughter, Gail Alexander; sister, Mildred Scott; several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was conducted Sunday, April 10, 2016 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel with Rev. Justin Hernandez officiating. The family will receive friends from 6:00pm until 8:00pm Saturday at the funeral home. A committal service will be held at 10:00am, Monday at Westlawn Gardens of Memory.
