John William Tucker

John William Tucker, 97, of Clemmons passed away on Sunday, February 12, 2017. He was born on March 11, 1919 in Yadkin County to the late Millie Shore Tucker and Harrison Gladstone Tucker. He was predeceased by his wife of 68 years, Ruth Johnson Tucker. Mr. Tucker was a World War II veteran who served in the Army in North Africa and Europe. He retired from working at Hanes Dye and Finishing Company for 41 years as a warehouse supervisor. John loved nature and he grew up hunting, fishing, and working in the soil. He nurtured a home garden for fifty plus years and his speciality was growing tomatoes to share with his neighbors. He was a diehard fan of the Atlanta Braves and NASCAR. Mr. Tucker was a loving father, grandfather, and great-grandfather. He is survived by daughters Loretta Tucker of Advance and Nancy Tucker Finger of Garner, grandchildren John Finger and fiancée Flora Grey Evans, Paul Finger, and Allison Gillies and husband Brett, great-grandchildren Caroline and Cameron Gillies. He is also survived by sister-in-law and brother-in-law Shirley and Thomas Blackburn, brother-in-law, Robert Glenn Johnson, Jr., and sister-in-law, Mrs. Roby Brown. Many thanks to special friends Flossie Johnson and Maxine and Jim Mast. The family appreciates the kindness of Andy Jones, PA at Novant Health Forsyth Medical Center. A funeral service was conducted Tuesday, February 14, 2017 at Hayworth-Miller Lewisville Chapel by Mr. Tucker’s nephew, Rev. Tim Tucker. Burial followed at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. Nancy Armstrong Dail

Nancy Armstrong Dail, 79, passed away peacefully on Friday, February 10th at Bermuda Commons skilled care facility in Clemmons. Nancy was born in Winston-Salem on January 27, 1938 to the late John Armstrong and Amalie Bryan Armstrong. Nancy is survived by Jim Dail, her loving husband of 57 years, her daughter Melanie Dail, son Byron Dail, and her brother Danny Armstrong, all of Winston-Salem. Nancy loved flower gardening and walking on the trails at Tanglewood Park with Jim and their dog Higgins. A private celebration of Nancy’s life was held with family and friends on Sunday, February 12th at their home in Clemmons. Joan Priest Thompson Mrs. Joan Priest Thompson, 87, passed away February 10, 2017 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. She was born December 25, 1929 in Toronto, Canada to the late Ernest Priest and Keturah Alice Hallam Priest. Mrs. Thompson was preceded in death by her husband, Roy Thompson in 2005. She was a member of Shiloh Lutheran Church and she retired from the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County School System as Food Service Manager with 21 years of service. Mrs. Thompson is survived by her two sons, Stephen Thompson and wife Marcia and Paul Thompson; three step-grandchildren, Dawn, Jodie, and Rodney; her sister, Alice Moffatt and husband Harold. She is also survived by several nieces and nephews. A funeral service was held Monday, February 13, 2017 at Shiloh Lutheran Church with the Rev. Dr. John Beeg officiating. Interment followed in the church cemetery. Doris Campbell Cumbo

Mrs. Doris Campbell Cumbo, 93, of Winston-Salem, passed away Thursday, February 9, 2017, at her home. Doris was born March 28, 1923 in Forsyth County to Wade and Nellie Mullican Campbell. She graduated first in her high school class at Clemmons school. Doris married Horace Lee Cumbo in September of 1942. She was employed at RJ Reynolds in the Executive Offices and retired from Shareholder Services. She was a loving and supportive daughter, wife, mother, grandmother and great-grandmother and will be greatly missed by her family and friends. In addition to her parents, she was preceded in death by her loving husband of 41 years. She is survived by her two children, Mike Cumbo (Cheryl) of High Point and Carol Cumbo Roberts (Terrance) of Siloam Springs, AK; four grandchildren, April Cumbo King (Brian) of Raleigh, Jeremy Cumbo of Atlanta, GA, Monty Roberts of Fayetteville, AK, and Ryan Roberts of Mandeville, LA; five great-grandchildren, Jameson and Josephine Kind, Carter, Kendall and Mason Roberts; and cousin Burton Boner (Nancy) of Clemmons. Carl Gustav Monson

Mr. Carl Gustav Monson, 88, of Winston-Salem, NC, died Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at his home. Carl was born in Mont Pelier, North Dakota, to Gust Monson and Hazel Mortensen Monson on June 28, 1928. He enlisted in the US Army Air Corps on June 28, 1946, at Ft. Snelling, MN and except for a break in service in 1948-49, remained in the USAF until his retirement December 1, 1967. During his last seven years of service, MSgt. Monson attended night classes at the Capitol Institute of Technology, Washington, DC, graduating two weeks after retirement with a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology. He moved to Winston-Salem, where he worked for AT&T as a Technical Writer, Task Group Leader and Writing Supervisor until he retired again in February, 1988. He was a veteran of World War II and served in the OSI where he was awarded AF Commendation Medal with one oak leaf cluster. He was involved in MENSA, VFW, Sunday school instruction, Genealogy research, and Clemmons Methodist Columbarium. Carl was preceded in death by his father, mother, first wife, Ursula of Wiesbaden, Germany, and sister, Virginia Wyant. Carl is survived by his second wife, Mary; six children, Lynn Jones Moore (Jim)of Ocean Isle Beach, NC, Kathy Jones Crouse (Ken) of Fallbrook, CA, Carol Monson Carroll (Dallas)of Danbury, NC, Gary Christian Monson (Julie)of Simpsonville, SC, Susan Jones Platt (Sam)of Clemmons, NC, and Adele Monson Cogar (Ross) of Winston-Salem, NC, eleven grandchildren, Jennifer Moore, Taylor Crouse, Allie Monson Walton, Andrew Monson, Katie Monson, Hannah Platt, Amanda Worley, Spencer Worley, Mikala Platt, Lauren Jones, Sophia Verevkin; and two great grandchildren, Owen Walton and Coen Goodson. A Celebration of Life will be held Monday, February 20, 2017 at 2:00 PM at Clemmons United Methodist Church. Inurnment will follow at the church Garden of Memories. Ray Blackburn

Mr. Ray Blackburn, 84, of Winston-Salem passed away February 5, 2017 at Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home. He was born October 20, 1932 in Wilkes County to the late Levi and Celie Holman Blackburn. Mr. Blackburn was a former member of Lewisville Baptist Church and attended Calvary Baptist Church. He served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War. He graduated from Mt. Pleasant High School and retired from Bell South / AT&T with 43 years of service. He was an avid golfer at Tanglewood Golf Club. Mr. Blackburn was preceded in death by his parents, and twelve sisters and brothers. He is survived by his loving wife of 61 years, Rita Hartzog Blackburn; two daughters, Kathy Blackburn Gupton (Johnny) and Jill Blackburn Cawley (Jon); four grandchildren, Melody Gupton, Kendall Cawley, Cameron Cawley (Antonia) and Simon Cawley and a brother, Bruce Blackburn. A funeral service was held Wednesday, February 8, 2017 at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. Interment followed at Westlawn Gardens of memory in Clemmons.

Marilyn Ruth Crews Tuttle

Mrs. Marilyn C. Tuttle, 88, of Advance passed away Sunday, February 12, 2017 at Forsyth Medical Center. Marilyn was born in Davie County to Annie P. and John M. Crews on January 14, 1929. She was a graduate of Shady Grove High School, Class of 1945. She was employed by Sara Lee for 45 years until her retirement in 1991. Marilyn was a beloved mother, wife, grandmother, aunt and friend. She is predeceased by her husband, Thomas D. Tuttle; sisters, Virginia Stimpson and Louise Cornatzer; and brothers John M. Crews, Walter Crews, and Robert Crews. She is survived by her daughters, Linda Taylor and Pam Fogleman, both of Advance; two step-grandsons, Allen Fogleman of Charleston, SC and Tyler Fogleman and wife, Michele of Norwood, NC; four step-great grandchildren; a dear brother-in-law, Wiley Tuttle of Winston-Salem; and many nieces and nephews who she dearly loved. A graveside service will be held at Westlawn Gardens of Memory in Clemmons on Wednesday, February 15, 2017 at 2:00 P.M with Rev. Bobby Vaughan officiating.
