West Forsyth High swimmer Tucker Burhans won the North Carolina state 4A championship Saturday in two categories and was named the most outstanding swimmer of the state finals.

A senior, Burhans has a scholarship to swim at UNC-Chapel Hill this fall. He is the son of Andrew and Dawn Burhans and started competitive swimming at age 6 for the summer league Waterford Stingrays. His first swim lessons were as a toddler at the Jerry Long Family YMCA.

He has swam for West for four years, lettering each year. His mother said it was the Waterford experience as a child that hooked him on swimming.

“When he was 11, he started swimming year round,” she said.

Burhans won in the 100 free swim category, setting a school record. He also won in the 100 back stroke category, breaking the school record and the 4A state record.

His coach, Sandy Thomerson, praised Burhans, one of the team’s co-captains. “Tucker is a wonderful role model to his fellow teammates and is a very level headed young man. His work ethic is great,” she said.

He served as a junior marshal last year. He is an honor student, president of West’s Fellowship of Christian Athletes Club and a member of Calvary Baptist Church and has attended a number of mission trips with the church.

He swims Monday-Friday from 5 to 7 a.m. and on Saturday.
