Couriering Clemmons — Looking back on events from 1970

Couriering the area this week in 1970 – Mary and Margaret McLeod were featured in the “Look Alike” section of the paper.

Stephen Brewer Harper, son of Mr. and Mrs. L. Marion Harper of Clemmons, left for Fort Burgwin Research Center at Ranchos de Taos, New Mexico, He spent six weeks there where he was Field Assistant for the University of North Carolina Geology Field Camp.

Elaine Rinehart, daughter of Lt. Col. and Mrs. James H. Rinehart of Clemmons, received a diploma in drama from the North Carolina School of the Arts.

Jean Lybrook, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. W. R. Lybrook of Clemmons, was one of thirty-one graduates to receive a diploma from Salem Academy.

The 1970 honor graduates from West Forsyth Senior High School were – Nancy Lynn Alexander, Donna Jean Black, Steven Raymond Carter, Louis Frances Denaro, IV, Mary Catherine Dix, Angela Dunn, Robert Daniel Fulton, Katherine Virginia Grant, Ronald Stephen Hamrick, Mary Ruth Hurtt, Barbara Lea Landers, Lindsay Franklin Miller, III, Douglas James Minick, Thomas Lee Phelps, Monte Glenn Plott, Jan Carole Postove, Donna Lee Seagraves, Ronnie Alvin Spach, Robert Gwyn Binkley (class president), Olen Lee Stokes, Jr., Loretta Gail Tucker, Ernest Ray “Sonny” Williams and Susan Elizabeth Willis.

The Southwest Junior High “Students of the Year” were Gina Cundiff, Ricky Luka, Michael Anthony, Ricky Landreth, Pat Cannon and Claudia Brickey.

Ken Roberts, a junior at West Forsyth Senior High School, was selected by the US Coast Guard Auxiliary to represent their Piedmont Division IX at the Coast Guard Academy at New London, Connecticut for five days.

The Clemmons Volunteer Fire Department elected new officers – Joe Lawrence, president; Bill Wall, vice president; Jack Cumby, secretary and Jack Holder, treasurer. Directors were Graham Hodnett, John Green, A. W. Bunch and Jack Higgins. The Directors remaining on the board were Aluis York, Hal Bingham, Kermit Essex, Jr., Walter Halbrook, Frank Hire, R. K. Smith, John Collins and H. H. Scheffer.

Dixon Caldwell Williams, son of Mr. and Mrs. Dorman Williams of Clemmons, was one of sixteen rising freshman at St. Andrews College to be studying in Europe over the summer.

Bobby Shutt, son of Mr. and Mrs. Richard E. Shutt, received the “Scout of the Month” award from Scout Troop 712.

Chris Ward, son of Mr. and Mrs. Charles T. Wood of Clemmons, was named to the Dean’s list at East Carolina University.

Clyde Marshall Bodsford, son of Mrs. Ruby K. Bodsford of Clemmons, made the Dean’s list at Appalachian State University.
