Library closing on July 4th

All Forsyth County Public Library locations will be closed on Wednesday, July 4.

Children’s Story times

Children’s Story times: Join us for great books, finger plays, songs and crafts. Tuesdays at 10:30 a.m. for toddlers (ages 18 months to 3 years), Thursdays at 10:30 a.m. for preschoolers (ages 3-5).

Music & Movement: Join us for dancing, singing and shaking out those sillies. Best for children 18 months to 5 years and caregivers, but all ages are welcome. Music and Movement takes place on the second Wednesday of the month at the Clemmons Branch Library. The next Music and Movement session will be on Wednesday, July 11 at 10:30 a.m.

Summer Reading Program

NC Zoo: Animal Sound Bites: Ever wonder what animals are saying? Find out on Tuesday, July 10, at 2 p.m. at the Clemmons Branch Library. Animals make all kinds of sounds to help them survive. Through sound bites, animal artifacts and a few live animals we will learn why animals are making so much noise. Presented by the North Carolina Zoo.

Teen programs

Music Around the World: Teens grades 6-12 are invited to the Clemmons Branch Library on Wednesday, July 11, at 4 p.m. to learn about world music by listening to, seeing, and playing instruments from around the world. Using a variety of materials, they will also have the opportunity to build their own unique instruments. Registration is required. Presented by the Wake Forest University Museum of Anthropology. Adult programs

Book Lovers’ Club: The Clemmons Branch Library’s Book Lovers’ Club meets every first Monday of the month (unless the date falls on a holiday). Join this dynamic group for a great discussion of a selected title. Free and open to the public. The next meeting will be on July 2 at 6:30 p.m. with a discussion of The Handmaid’s Tale by Margaret Atwood.

Clemmons Coookin’ Club: If you enjoy cooking, come join the Clemmons Cookin’ Club. We meet every month on the third Wednesday at 12:30 p.m. in the auditorium at the Clemmons Branch Library. Come in and choose a recipe from a pre-selected book and we’ll make a copy for you. Bring in the finished dish on the day of the meeting to share with other members. Expand your palate by tasting all the recipes, connect with people who enjoy cooking, and discuss the recipes. Call 703-2920 if you have questions. It will last about 1 hour. Our next meeting is Wednesday, July 21, in the auditorium, 3554 Clemmons Road and will feature German recipes.

Literacy project needs volunteers

READWS (Read-Write-Spell) needs volunteers to serve as tutors to public-school students and to help with reading parties. Two 7-day tutor training classes are scheduled for fall starting Sept. 4 and Oct. 2. An information session for people interested in learning more about the program will be held on Thursday, July 12, from 10-11 a.m. at the Jerry Long Family YMCA, on Tuesday, July 31, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the Miller Park Recreation Center, and on Wednesday, Aug. 15, from 2:30-3:30 p.m. at the Robinhood Road Family YMCA. Trinity Elms apartment tour

Transitioning from home to a retirement community can be challenging at best. Trinity Elms Independent Living is hosting an apartment tour and informative session on downsizing with Chaos to Calm’s Lori Fike on Thursday, July 12, from 2-4 p.m. at Trinity Elms Health and Rehab Community Room,  7449 Fair Oaks Drive, Clemmons, NC 27012. Shiloh Lutheran Church

Southwest High reunion

We serve coffee, juice and pastries every Sunday morning at 9:45 a.m. Children’s and adult Sunday school starts at 10 a.m. Worship service with Pastor Michael Duffield begins at 11 a.m. This Saturday, June 30, is our third “Cruise-in for Christ” car show of 2018, from 5 p.m. until. Gospel music with Billy Myers, Lonnie & Faye Maines, and the Victory Singers. Concessions will be available. Wednesday evening is our “Just As I Am” casual and family service. Lewisville American Legion Post 522

Join a community post that supports our veterans and the town of Lewisville. Responsible for the veteran’s memorial and Memorial Day event at the Shallowford Square in Lewisville. Clemmons Food Pantry

The Clemmons Food Pantry, now located at 2585 Old Glory Road, Suite 109, Clemmons, is open Tuesdays from 4 to 6 p.m., Thursdays from 4 to 7 p.m. and Saturdays from 9 to 11 a.m. People may receive services or drop off donations at these times. www.clemmonsfoodpantry.org

 

Cross Stitching at Shiloh Lutheran

If you enjoy needle crafting, knit, cross-stitch, crochet and non-sewing blanket projects, consider joining the Busy Hands Group, every Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. Located at Shiloh Lutheran Church fellowship hall, 703 Lewisville-Vienna Rd, Lewisville, NC 27023. Items donated to sick, needy and shut-ins.

Tanglewood Pool

The Peter S. Brunstetter Aquatic Center at Tanglewood Park is open for the season. The aquatic center features a winding tubing river, two slides, splash pad with water features and extended deck space. There is also a children’s pool area with a tumble bucket, raindrop, starburst and lemon drops. The lap pool area includes two diving boards and two water slides.

Season hours are: Monday-Saturday, 11 a.m. to 8 p.m.; Sunday: 11 a.m. to 6 p.m.

Daily rates are: Children two years and under — free; seniors (55+) and children 3-5 years —$5 per swimmer (weekdays, excluding holidays), $6 per swimmer (weekends and holidays); all others — $6 per swimmer (weekdays, excluding holidays), $7 per swimmer (weekends and holidays)

Season passes are: family (immediate household, children 18 years and under, 5 person maximum, includes park entrance sticker) — $400; seniors (55+) and children 3-5 years — $100; all others — $150.

Heirloom tomatoes class

“Heirloom Tomatoes,” an adult education class, will be held on July 18 from 11 a.m. to noon at the Arboretum at Tanglewood Park. Tracy Lounsbury, local grower, will speak. Learn about the characteristics of heirloom tomato varieties and how to grow them. Samples of tomatoes will be available to taste. Cost is free but registration is required. Contact coop-ext-registration@forsyth.cc or 336-703-2850, no earlier than two weeks prior to the program. Space is limited.
