George Smith DePuew

George Smith DePuew of St. Cloud, Florida, died at St. Cloud Regional Medical Center on Friday, July 19, 2018, after a brief hospitalization. He was 98.

George was born on Nov. 24, 1919, in Clarksville, Iowa, and attended school there. He met Eileen Helen Harrold, and they were married on June 12, 1938. They had four children, Ben LeRoy DePuew, Mary Ellen DePuew, Jenifer Ann DePuew and Michael William DePuew.

George served in the Unites States Navy during WWII, and the Air National Guard 1946 to 1949. In 1950, George was activated during the Korean Conflict because of his avionics specialty. He served in the United States Air Force obtaining the rank of master sergeant and was honorably discharged in November 1954.

George was instrumental in developing the “Identification Friend or Foe” system. This system was classified as secret by the military. When planes would approach a ship or military installation, the system would send a message to the approaching plane. If the plane sent back a correct code they were permitted to land. If a code was not returned, the plane was shot down. Additionally, he was part of the group that installed the system on planes and military bases across the U.S.

After his military service, he was employed by the federal government as an Avionics Specialist with the Federal Aviation Administration (FAA). He became the first avionics inspector in general aviation in the United States. George retired from the FAA in 1976 after 29 years of service.

George and Eileen loved music and also dancing. They also loved the beach with summer family reunions at the RV parks, which were filled with lots of love, fun, laughter and good food.

George never met a stranger. He was very active in the many states where ever he lived. He was instrumental in building several Catholic churches in the different areas of the country. He served in many roles chairing fundraising, building, and advisory boards, started Boy Scouts troops, and was scoutmaster of several. He was a devout Catholic, very active in the Knights of Columbus councils holding many offices and was a 4th degree knight.

George was preceded in death by his parents Earl DePuew and Ila Lumm DePuew, brother Edward DePuew and wife, Eileen Helen Harrold DePuew. Elieen H. DePuew passed away on Sept. 2, 2005, at age 86. George later married Theresa L. Cote on January 17, 2006, who passed away in November 2016.
