On Friday, the Titans will face Northwest Guilford High School during their annual homecoming game at 7:30 p.m. There will be good food, loud music and great football, but to top it all off will be arguably the largest student section in the county, decked out entirely in the hallowed green and gold of West Forsyth and doing what they know best: cheering.

The homecoming football game, preempted by spirit week, is always the best time of the school year. Spirit week never fails to amaze me; annually, students go all out, wearing extravagant costumes and get-ups in an attempt to win the daily “best dressed” contests. This year, however, was different, and it’s all due to a little organization on campus called West Wackos.

With participation from nearly half of every grade level, West Wackos is the largest and one of the oldest clubs on campus. The 2018 Wackos, as they prefer to be called, have revived the student section and brought an extra bit of pep to the student body. Whether it be through tweeting daily updates on the state of Titan athletics or holding pep rallies after school, the Wackos have prompted a significant increase in school spirit, lifting it to a level I haven’t seen since my freshman year at West.

Over the last week, these students demonstrated their spirit through a series of themed days in order to increase excitement for the impending big game. Monday was decades day, and students emulated the wardrobe of either the ’60s, ’70s, ’80s or ’90s. Tuesday, students dressed up like their favorite teacher. Wednesday was America day. Today is jersey day, and Friday, the culmination of a week’s worth of build up, will, of course, be green and gold day.

Students and graduates alike will flock to the field where they will stand for hours, relentlessly cheering on the Titans and supporting their classmates, regardless of the score. With the help of the marching band, dance team, cheerleaders and the student section leaders, the Wackos will bring a great display of school spirit to what should be a thrilling game. If you want to witness this impressive sight firsthand, I suggest you come on out to support your local football team. Tickets are $6 at the door and parking is free.
