The Ask Sam column in the March 30 Winston-Salem Journal about April Fool’s Day brought to mind the famous, or infamous, prank that appeared in the Clemmons Courier on April 1, 1993, page 10B.  The story was about David Rowe starting a new business in Clemmons of converting septic tanks into hot tubs. In the next issue of the Clemmons Courier, dated April 8, 1993, page 2, Editor Dwight Sparks admitted to being fooled by the press release about Rowe’s Septic Conversions Inc.

Should you wish to reprint, or follow up, I can tell you that the perpetrator of that wonderful April Fool’s joke was Dave Knesel, who sent a letter, signed A.F. Day, to the Courier confessing to the hoax.

I have lived in Clemmons 50 years, and have never known of a funnier April Fool’s trick on the local scene.
