Novant Health announces Bipin Karunakaran as vice president of clinical insights and analytics

WINSTON-SALEM — Novant Health has hired Bipin Karunakaran as the new vice president of clinical insights and analytics. Karunakaran has more than 20 years of experience in development and engineering.

In this new role, Karunakaran will be responsible for clinical insights and analytics across the Novant Health system. He will help the organization connect systemwide goals and strategic imperatives to outcomes in clinical safety, quality improvement, disease management, and protocol and extended care pathway development. Karunakaran will provide strategic direction to support clinical effectiveness of safety and quality, as well as lead and evolve how Novant Health incorporates analytics through actionable insights.

In his most recent position as the vice president of data and innovation at Geisinger Health in Danville, Pennsylvania, Karunakaran was responsible for building and implementing the enterprise data platforms, including the big data platform for the health care system. He developed strategic road maps to build and deploy the enterprise information technology, data and analytics systems.

Prior to working at Geisinger Health, Karunakaran had extensive experience with development and engineering. He served as director for development services for REI, where Karunakaran was responsible for building the outdoor retailer’s Business Intelligence Competency Center and SAP application Center of Excellence engineering teams. Karunakaran also held several leadership positions with Disney Technology Solutions, Disney Interactive Media Group and Microsoft. He has also held board seats as a technical advisor for two major startups.

Karunakaran received a master’s of science in computer science and engineering from the University of Washington in Seattle and a master’s of business administration from the Anderson School of Management at the University of California, Los Angeles.
