Couriering the area this week in 1997 — The West Forsyth varsity football team beat Davie County with its first loss of the season, ending speculation that West had slipped a notch.

Guilford Technical Community College awarded degrees and diplomas to 639 students, including students from this area — John S. Pierce of Advance, Christopher A. Davis of Clemmons and Jeffrey K. Brogdon of Lewisville.

The Rev. John Calhoun moved from his position of interim pastor to that of pastor of Union Hill Baptist Church on Lasater Lake Road in Clemmons.

The Great Wagon Road in Lewisville was once step closer to being a reality since the idea had been proposed about five years ago.

West Forsyth boys varsity soccer team tightened up its defense and took a firm grip on the Central Piedmont Conference lead. Battling with Reynolds for first-place in the conference standings, West scored two second-half goals and held the Demons scoreless en route to a 3-1 win.

The Lady Titans overcame Reynolds to win the conference volleyball championship.

West Forsyth varsity football “Titan Player of the Week” was junior Tripp Stone. Although almost every player made a contribution to West’s 41-20 win over Davie County, none were important than Stone’s first punt return.

Residents of Lewisville were preparing for the official dedication of the Shallowford Square. As part of the event, town officials were also dedicating David McKee Street, marking the western boundary of the square.

Dr. Karen Murphy joined the Animal Hospital of Clemmons as a new associate veterinarian, joining Dr. Jackie Martin and Dr. Molly Douglass.

Tryouts for the girls’ volleyball team at Kennedy were held. Those who made the team were — Kandace Wernsing, Meghan Jenkins, Jackie Dobosy, Katie Lawing,  Joanna Long, Shannon Ilsely, Emilie Gutherie, Shanekda Bennett, Jamie Delong, Lindsey Abrams, Lindsey Kasper, Kristen Pritchard, April Tesh, Jaclyn LeClear, Grayson Brown, Meghan Nicholson and Lisa Calgaro.

The Lewisville Titan Mitey Mites closed out their Pop Warner football season with a 13-0 win over the High Point Lions. Standouts for the game were — Brooks Ore, Kyle Jarrett, Tyler Vogler, Andrew Bodenheimer, Richard Jones, Andrew Richardson, Tamario Stewart, Wesley McBride and Josh Vogel.
