Beginning Friday, the staff and students at Clemmons Elementary will be kicking off its annual fund drive with several days of fun activities and events. The fundraiser will be sponsored by the school’s PTA leadership team and its members. A pep rally Friday will kick off the event to generate excitement among the student body. This year, the money raised for the school will be allocated towards the construction of a new playground. The goal is to raise $30,000.

The need for a new playground at the Clemmons Elementary campus is quite significant as the current equipment is 18 years old. Principal Dr. Wendy Brewington noted that the playground not only gets used heavily during the school day but that it also has a lot of activity from the community on weekends. She indicated that a new school playground is necessary to the healthy physical development of students, and that it provides something for the children to do during recess. It improves their flexibility and balancing skills as well as their overall motor skills.

Next week, there will be active communication to parents and the community about the fundraiser. Robocalls, Facebook posts, and activities in the carlines will take place to encourage students to raise as much money as possible. At the end of the week, there will be celebration fun runs for each grade level and a school-wide celebration pep rally. Students will run four laps for the fun run, and this will not be tied in with their donations. It will be a fun event and an opportunity for students to unwind from their normal routine.

If $20,000 is collected for the fundraiser, Dr. Brewington and Ronnie Caviness, the assistant principal, will be duct taped to a wall. If $30,000 is raised the two administrators will get slimed at the pep rally.

Dr. Brewington noted that the school needs a significant amount of support from parents and the community to raise funds for this project. The activities planned for next week for students will be a fun addition to the fund-raising aspect of the event.
