The women of Centenary United Methodist Church of Clemmons will sponsor its third annual “Go Red for Women, Tea” from 2-4 p.m. on Saturday, Feb. 22, at the church. Centenary UMC is located at 5280 Hampton Road.  The event goal is to educate women in our community on heart disease and related health improvement activities.

The Go Red for Women is a movement to make sure women know that they are at risk for heart disease so they can take action to protect their health. The “Go Red for Women” initiative was created in 2004 by the American Heart Association and is designed to empower women to take charge of their heart health.

Heart disease is the leading cause for death in women, according to the Office of Women’s Health at the Food and Drug Administration. According to a Center for Disease Control report, “Despite increases in awareness over the past decades, only about half (56%) of women recognize that heart disease is their No. 1 killer.”

On the importance of the church presenting this annual event, Beth Clark, administrative council chairperson at Centenary, stated, “Active women today have become more conscious of heart health information and the need to lead a healthy lifestyle. Centenary is a mission-minded community church and I am glad that we are able to provide a friendly, casual setting over tea to share life changing information.” Carolyn Howell, program coordinator who is also a health educator, states that “the event is important to let everyone know that being vigilant in staying heart healthy by knowing your medical data, eating right, exercising, getting proper sleep and relaxation are imperative. As www.goredforwomen.org points out, ‘Heart disease and stroke cause 1 in 3 deaths among women each year — more than all cancers combined. Fortunately, we can change that because 80 percent of cardiac and stroke events may be prevented with education and action.”

“We are excited to continue to present this tea. The first year, we had over 60 women from the community attending. For the 2019 event, we had even more attendees. Everyone says they have a good time,” says the Centenary planning team. As part of its Missions Ministry, the church strives to highlight through its health ministries the importance of educating women on prevention and early detection related to improving heart health in the north Davidson community.

This year’s program, which has the theme of “A Healthy and Grateful Heart,” will focus on factors, recognizing symptoms and what can be done to take care of one’s heart. Featured speakers are Janet Bliden, support network coordinator for WomenHeart of Cone Health, and Kayla Grey, a massage therapist. Gray will address how stress can be managed with massage therapy, along with the benefits of aroma therapy. There will also be entertainment and unique blends of tea served.

Community members are invited to come out and join other women for fellowship, learn healthy eating and living tips, have some fun, enjoy light refreshments and door prizes.

This is a free event open to the community, but registration is required. Those interested in attending are asked to call the church 336-766-5987 and leave a message with your name, phone number, and the number in your party to register. Please RSVP by Feb. 16.
