West girls finish second place at indoor track state championships; wrestlers sending six to state tournament this weekend

The West Forsyth girls finished second in the NCHSAA 4-A state indoor track championship last Saturday at JDL Fast Track in Winston-Salem with several noteworthy individual and relay performances.
The girls team finished with 57.5 points, just shy of Panther Creek, which finished with 69.
The boys team, led by runner up finishes by Mason Ellis in the shot put and Braxton Ware in the 500, finished 13th.
Ellis was the reigning state champion in the shot put and holds the state record.
Jada Dowd, coming off a torn ACL a season ago, had a second-place finish in the high jump after her leap of 5 feet, 4 inches to headline the individual performances from the girls team.
The 4×200 relay team finished third, and the 4×400 took home third place.
The girls distance runners also posted noteworthy performances.
Three Titans finished in the top-6 in the 1600 — Eliza Broce (third), Bailey Reutinger (fourth), and Kelly Smith (sixth).
In the 3200, three Titans posted top-10 finishes — Kendall Phillips (third), Reutinger (eighth), and Smith (10th).
The West Forsyth wrestling team will send six wrestlers to the NCHSAA 4-A state tournament this weekend in Greensboro after their top four finishes at the 4-A Midwest Regional last Saturday at Ragsdale High School in Jamestown.
Evan LaBella (126 pounds), Jacob Zaitawi (170) and Kevin Perez-Olmedo (220) all advanced to their championship matches before coming up just short and finishing in second place in their respective weight classes.
Joseph Burns (106), Landon Hairston (138) and Aidan Meagher (182) all had fourth places finishes to earn their bids.
LaBella, a senior, will enter the state tournament with a 36-8 record.
Zaitawi, a junior, has a 36-12 record.
Perez-Olmedo, a junior, is 29-18.
Burns, a junior, is 31-21, and Hairston, a sophomore, is 19-14.
Meagher, a freshman, enters the state tournament 19-14.
The state wrestling tournament will get underway Thursday, February 20 with weigh ins starting at 5:30. First round matches for the 4-A classification are scheduled to being at 7 p.m. at the Greensboro Coliseum.
