Couriering the area this week in 1989 — David Sipprell and Michael Beck, both of Boy Scout Troop 736, received their Eagle Scout awards at Clemmons United Methodist Church. Sipprell is the son of Mr. and Mrs. Robert Sipprell and Beck is the son of Mr and Mrs. Charles Beck. The Rev. Bill Osbourne Jr. spoke to the scouts, their leaders and parents about the importance of the Eagle Scout. Eagle Scouts Brian Arlt and Howard Little III participated in the candle ceremony. Assistant Scoutmaster Hal Willis gave the Eagle charge and Scoutmaster Jim Robertson along with district chairman Bruce Bradley made presentations of the Eagle awards.

A surprise retirement dinner for Ellen Lane was held at Temple Baptist fellowship hall in Lewisville. She retired from Hanes Knitting Company after 45½ years employment. She was honored by her husband Gray and her brothers and sisters. Approximately 30 family members and guests attended the event.

Wendy Anne Blount, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. James N. Blount, completed cadet basic training on Aug. 12 and entered the Corps of Cadets at the U.S. Military Academy at West Point, N.Y. Cadet Blount will be the first woman from North Carolina to play on the Army varsity women’s soccer team and they will begin preseason play with a tournament in Miami. Cadet Blount, a 1989 West Forsyth graduate, was a four year all-conference soccer player for the Titan’s girls team. She will be playing midfield and striker for the West Point team.

One of Forsyth County’s oldest citizens, Henny Heilbrunn of Lewisville, celebrated her 105th birthday. Lewisville’s oldest resident went to Ryan’s Restaurant with some 12 to 15 members of her family for the birthday party.

The West Forsyth Titanides brought home numerous awards from the Superstar Drill Team Camp, which they attended. Eighteen members of the group traveled to Peace College in Raleigh, where they spent four days dancing from dawn to dusk. Those attending included Jeannette Emery, Kristin Burke, Andrea Logan, Julie Jackson, Amy Amazon, Whitney Bond, April Cox, Jennifer Cleary, Jill Blackwell, Erica Hayes, Stephanie Willets, Jennifer Pyatt, Tammie Bush, Ashleigh Starczewski, Laura Parks, Tara Cothran, Stephanie Sample and Sherry Brown.

Jane Roberts and Pat Watts tied for the low putts honor at last week’s Tanglewood Ladies Golf Association play. Both Roberts and Watts finished with scores of 32. In the low gross scores, Betty Hutchins shot a 90 to finish seven strokes ahead of Carolyn Tilley. Jane Roberts took third with a score of 98.  In low net scores, Lucille Potter took first with a tally of 65. Kelly Evans and Dollie Diehl place second and third with respective scores  of 70 and 71.

Cindy Ellis, daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Clinton Ellis of Advance, was one of 30 graduating students from the nursing program of Forsyth Technical Community College. A reception was held after the pinning ceremony to honor the graduates. Ellis has accepted a position as staff nurse on 8th Cardiac at Forsyth Memorial Hospital.
