WINSTON-SALEM — The RiverRun International Film Festival will screen two films in upcoming weeks at the Marketplace Drive-In as part of its RiverRun Retro programming. On Friday, Sept. 4, the 1987 classic Spaceballs will be screened. The following Thursday, Sept. 10, Junebug, a 2005 film set in Pfafftown, will be screened.
Spaceballs, a cult classic starring Mel Brooks, John Candy, Rick Moranis and Bill Pullman (RiverRun Advisory Board member and 2008 Master of Cinema Award recipient) tells the story of a star pilot and his sidekick who must come to the rescue of a princess and save the galaxy from a ruthless race of beings.
In Junebug, written by Winston-Salem’s own Angus McLachlan — who is also a RiverRun Advisory Board member — successful North Carolinian George meets Chicago art gallery owner Madeleine at a benefit, and it’s love at first sight. She decides to head south to meet with an artist, so George takes the opportunity to come along and introduce her to his parents, Eugene and Peg (RiverRun Advisory Board member and 2017 Master of Cinema Award recipient Celia Weston), drop-out brother Johnny and his pregnant wife Ashley (played by Amy Adams in her breakout role). Confronting the outsider soon opens a can of worms as emotions revive and emerge.
“We are thrilled to present these films that have not one, not two, but three connections to our wonderful RiverRun Advisory Board,” said Rob Davis, RiverRun’s executive director. “All three of these folks — Angus, Celia and Bill — have made incredible contributions to film, and we are humbled to have all of them as part of the RiverRun family. We cannot wait to show both these incredible films at Marketplace.”
