WINSTON-SALEM — Drivers will notice a welcome change this week as they travel along U.S. 421/Salem Parkway in downtown Winston-Salem.
N.C. Department of Transportation crews plan to install new signs Tuesday increasing the speed limit from 45 mph to 55 mph throughout the new corridor. Signs will be changed out between just south of Martin Luther King Jr. Drive (Exit 232A) and Knollwood Street (Exit 236).

This marks one of the final steps in transforming the former Business 40 route into a safer, modern and aesthetically enhanced freeway. The work included removing several closely positioned interchanges, which helped make the speed limit increase possible along the 1.2-mile stretch.

Closeout work for the project is expected to be completed within the next couple months, weather permitting.

Drivers should watch out for crews working along the shoulders of Salem Parkway to make the sign changes.
