PINEHURST — Grady and Scott Newton of Wallburg took home the 55th Carolinas Father-Son Championship with a 5-under-par, 67 at Legacy Golf Links in Pinehurst on July 16. The duo made seven birdies, including one on their second playoff hole on No.10, to come out on top.
“(Scott) hit (his drive) left into the trees and I just had to find a fairway and found it,” Grady said following the team’s playoff win. “He stuck it to about eight feet, pretty easy up the hill and made a birdie.”
Scott is a four-time runner-up in this event in ‘91, ‘09, ‘13 and ‘15 while he was paired with his father, Ernie Newton. Coming down to the final putt on the second playoff hole, Scott was eager to be crowned the overall champion this year with his son.
Davis and Eric Sayman of Charlotte came up short of their first Father-Son Championship title after making a par on the second playoff hole to earn runners-up. Eli and John Kennedy of Clemmons and Bermuda Run, respectively, Neil and Steve Wilkinson of Wilmington and Chris and Jay Locker of Chapin, S.C. all shared a piece of third place with scores of 4-under-par, 68.
Across all divisions, 682 players played in the 55th Carolinas Father-Son Championship at seven different golf courses.
