Couriering this area this week in 1991 — 30 years ago:

A Bermuda Run resident, Kent Mathewson is the new interim town manager in Lewisville. A decision was made last week at a special council meeting to hire Mathewson part-time, at a salary of $1,250 per month. He has had a distinguished career as an assistant manager and manager of five different cities across the U.S., beginning in Asheboro in 1939, and as a professor, lecturer and writer.

Howard and Dena Share of Clemmons announced the birth of their first grandchild, Sarah Ann Singer, on Sept. 10. Parents of the baby are Ken and Marla Singer of Laurel, Maryland.

Jack Kepley from the Triad Orchid Society spoke to members of the Lewisville Garden Club on “Home Orchid Growing” on Sept. 25. Rebecca Williams was the hostess at her home for the meeting. New officers of the club are Mrs. Bruce Adams, president; Mrs. R. Ferdinand Jones, secretary and Mrs. B. L. Adams, treasurer.

Forsyth County Commissioner Gerald Long said public reaction has been favorable to his changing political parties from Democrat to Republican. Long, who lives in Clemmons, made the switch last week. He says at present that he is not running for any office, but will probably make up his mind the first of the year. He estimated 95 to 97% of the reaction has been positive to his decision to switch to the Republican Party.

Larry W. Kirby, public works supervisor of Clemmons, has been named to the state Institute for Transportation Research and Education (ITRE) technology transfer program advisory committee. Kirby is one of six members from across the state on the committee. Kirby has been public works supervisor in Clemmon since August 1989.

At the beginning of the week, West Forsyth was thought of as the best 4-A football team in the state. After Tuesday’s USA Today hit the newsstands, the Titans were one of the best teams in the country. The national publication had West ranked 25th among high school teams.

The homecoming court for 1991 at West Forsyth has been chosen. Senior members are Desiree Anders, Tia Bailey, Carol Dellinger, Christy Hunt, Kelli Jones, Latasha Noble, Kristen Rossi, and Juli Samples. Representatives from the junior class are: Terri Byers, Cindy Claasen, Susan Cook, Amber Hicks, Nakisha Simmons, and Erin Youngren. The members from the sophomore class are: Adrienne Bodirnea, Suzanne Cook, Emily Jordan, Nichole Richmond, Erin Samsel, Amy Teague and Laura Wall. Freshman representatives are: Brandi Crapse, Holli Drane, Amy Lee, Melissa Meeks and Danielle Virtue.

Annie C. Hicks of Clemmons was recently honored for being a choir member for 40 years at Center Grove Baptist Church. She received an engraved plaque and corsage from her fellow choir members.
