November is Native American Heritage Month

All ages programs

Blanket Drive: Cover the City Project — Nov. 1- 24

You may drop off a new or gently used blanket from Nov. 1- 24 at the Lewisville Branch Library. A Cleaner World and the Cover the City Project are partnering to distribute these much needed blankets to the homeless population in shelters as well as for those who don’t use shelters during the coldest months of the year.

Pumpkin Search & Find (in-person, indoors)

Search the Children’s Area for the hidden images. Find them all and get a prize. All ages. Prizes provided by The Friends of the Lewisville Branch Library.

Music & Movement (in-person, outdoors)

• Wednesdays from 10-10:30 a.m. in November

Join in for songs and activities designed to support learning in a fun and engaging way. Recommended for children ages 2-5 years and their caregivers, but all ages are welcome. Masks are required for those 5 years of age and older.

Native American Heritage Month Program: Cherokee Pottery Making (virtual)

• Tuesday, Nov. 16, 5:30-6:30 p.m.
Recommended for families, but all ages welcome.

Learn all about Cherokee pottery making with Tina H. Smith from Wake Forest University’s Lam Museum of Anthropology in honor of Native American Heritage Month. Smith will discuss Cherokee pottery tradition and show the participants how to make a clay pot. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lewisville Library. EcoEXPLORE Nature Program: All About Mammals (in-person, outdoors)

• Friday, Nov. 19, 4-5 p.m.
• Shallowford Square Park

Learn all about mammals native to North Carolina in this in-person outdoor program by the Greensboro Science Center. Recommended for children in grades K-8, but all ages are welcome. Masks are required for those 5 years of age and older. Sponsored by the N.C. Arboretum.

Drop-in Crafts (in-person, indoors)

• Tuesday, Nov. 23, 10 a.m.-noon and 2-4 p.m.

• Lewisville Branch Library

Drop-in to make crafts at the Lewisville Branch. Paint a kindness rock, make a bookmark out of duck tape, and more. All ages are welcome. CDC guidelines will be followed to ensure everyone’s safety.

Teen Advisory Board Meeting (in-person, outdoors)

Lewisville Branch Library’s Teen Advisory Board is made up of Lewisville Branch Library’s teen volunteers (ages 12-18). The board meets to discuss ways to improve the Lewisville Branch Library’s service to teens. The Teen Advisory Board helps to plan programs, create displays and suggests resources that the library should purchase. Tuesdays at Two Book Club (in person, virtual)

The Hook & Loop Group meets the first Wednesday of each month at 11:30 a.m. Location: Lewisville Branch Library auditorium
Come and join yarn crafters who like to knit, crochet, embroider and such. Bring your own project to work on or use some simple supplies and patterns that will be on hand. All skill levels are welcome. The group shares each other’s company and maybe a tip or two about a project. No formal instruction. Yoga for Beginners (in person, virtual)

Join in at the Lewisville Branch auditorium or from home for two free yoga sessions to help uplift your mind and body during this stressful time. Give Thanks, Give Blood Drive

This Thanksgiving — give hope, give life, give blood. Help someone in your community this holiday by donating blood. The American Red Cross will be on-site with its bloodmobile in the Lewisville Branch Library’s parking lot on Friday, Nov. 5 from 11 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. Appointments are preferred, but walk-ins are welcome. Native American Genealogy 101 (in-person and virtual)

Do you have or wonder if you have Native American roots? Would you like to learn some tips on how to explore genealogy particular to this group? If so, then you will want to hear what Museum Educator Tina Smith from Wake Forest University’s LAM Museum of Anthropology has to say. She will discuss the challenges and benefits of exploring Native American genealogy, as well as how to start the process, where to look for records and information, and common resources that are used in research. Sponsored by the Friends of the Lewisville Library.
