Festival of Lights and Drive Through Toy Drive – Friday, December 3, 5:45 to 7:30 p.m. – The Downtown School – In honor of Cole Weaver, The Downtown School is holding its “Be Like Cole” Toy Drive in connection with its Festival of Lights. People can drive through and drop off a toy (new or gently used) while they enjoy the holiday lights. Staff members will also be accepting nonperishable food to help families in the community.

Adventures in Science – Monday, December 6, 9:50 to 10:45 a.m. – Lewisville Elementary – In the cafeteria at 9:50, fifth-graders will be showing off their science projects and chatting with judges who include David DeLade, the K-12 Science Program Director for WS/FCS. Throughout the day, all grades are participating and a total of about 115 science projects are expected. The top projects will go on to the District Science Fair

A Musical about Soccer, Teamwork and Never Giving Up – Tuesday, December 7, 11:45 a.m. – Union Cross Elementary – With the support of an Educator Grant from the Kernersville Chamber of Commerce, Music Specialist Ashley Hayes and students are staging “Goal: The Musical,” a show that includes four songs by musician John Jacobson and a rap called PRIDE (Positive attitude, Respect, Integrity, Discipline, Excellence) that is based on Union Cross’s Core Values. Two performances are scheduled. They will include a total of 160 students. On Dec. 17, the musicals will go on YouTube with virtual viewing parties being planned.

Donating Books to Distribute at Christmas for the City – Wednesday, December 8, 2 p.m. – Hawthorne Pharmacy, 3068 Trenwest Drive (336) 930-1729 – As a way of encouraging young people to read, the owner of the Olive Tree restaurant and members of The Links service organization are donating more than 250 boxes of books to be distributed at Christmas for the City on Dec. 18 at the Benton Convention Center and at elementary schools. The books are targeted at supporting students in kindergarten through second grade. On Wednesday afternoon, the boxes will be loaded at Hawthorne Pharmacy on Trenwest and delivered to the Winston-Salem/Forsyth County Schools Central Office.
