In the first annual Christmas decorations contest, the home of Rick and Beverly Myers was chosen by the Clemmons Jaycees as the winner.  For business entries, North Bay Trading Company on Lewisville-Clemmons Road was named the winner. The Myers and Doug Bishop from North Bay Trading Company will receive engraved plaques from the Jaycees for winning.

The mayor of Clemmons, Nat Swanson, expressed concerns over a new K-Mart store coming to the village. Swanson spoke to members of the West Area Council of the Chamber of Commerce about the concerns of extra traffic and impact of K-Mart on existing smaller shops in Clemmons. Mayor Swanson told the business people at the chamber breakfast that “This is a vital decision for Clemmons to make. A K-Mart will generate tremendous traffic in the village and we already have transportation problems in the business district.”

Mark and Charlane Holloway of Clemmons announced the birth of their daughter, Elizabeth Grace, on Nov. 28 at Forsyth Hospital. Elizabeth has an older sister, Emily, who is two. Maternal grandparents are Sheila and Bill Berger of Rochester, New York, and paternal grandparents are Joan and Frank Holloway of Advance.

Four area students were among those receiving degrees during fall commencement on Dec. 7 at East Carolina University. Those four included Amy Lynn Craig and Alan Lee Vestal of Clemmons, and Emily Grey Mattocks and Jerri Lynn Myers of Lewisville.

The Gourmet Dinner Club of Runnymead in Lewisville had a special meal and Christmas party recently. Lynn and Ron Black of Marblehead Drive hosted the party for seven couples. The club members not only enjoyed a sumptuous feast, but were invited to a casual pajama party, caroling through the neighborhood and a visit from Santa.

A Clemmons Girl Scout, Gwen Kovalk, had her poster design selected to be sent to Washington, D.C., for national judging. The local contest was open to girls from 13 counties. The theme of the contest was “Girl Scouts Care for the Earth.” Her winning design was a drawing depicting the ideas of reuse, replant and recycle over a picture of the earth. Gwen is the daughter of Ron and Debra Kovlak.

Chris Fincher from Wachovia Bank in Clemmons has been selected as the new chairman of the West Area Council of the Chamber of Commerce. Newly elected board members are Pat Burris from First Home Federal; Chris Crawford from Browning Ferris Industries; Cathay Hemly of Meadowbrook Terrace and Greg Hill from Cannon and Company. Outgoing chairman Dan Womble announced the 1991 accomplishments of the council including holding a golf tournament at Tanglewood; sponsoring the Day in the Village Festival and beginning a recycling project for Clemmons.
