Several area students were winners in the 2022 Science Fair for the Winston-Salem Forsyth County Schools.

The students who won first and second places in grades 3 through 12 will represent the school district in the 2022 N.C. Region V Science and Engineering Fair, which is scheduled for Feb. 17-19 and will be a virtual competition.

Elementary judging will be held on Feb. 17. Middle and High judging will be held on Feb 18. The awards ceremony is scheduled for Feb. 19.

Winners in the Regional V fair will go on to the state fair in March.

“Please help me celebrate the research accomplishments of all our young scientists, said David DeLade, program director for K-12 Science in the district. “The students’ steadfast dedication to science and love of learning prevailed yet again this year. I am proud of our students’ accomplishments. Congratulatory communications sent to parents, students, teachers, and principals have been met and returned with happiness and kind words. I am proud of our students, teachers, and principals during these fluid times.”

Area winners were:

• Harper Petree, second grade, Southwest Elementary — third place, “How far will it fly”

• Lorelei Vogler and Eshaal Janjua, fifth grade, Lewisville Elementary — second place, “Milk into green plastic”

• Bailey DeFere, third grade, Lewisville Elementary — third place, “A smile-filled reaction”

• Derringer Mauer, fifth grade, Morgan Elementary — first place. “Arrangement of baffles to reduce sand erosion”

• Owen Webb, fifth grade, Southwest Elementary — third place, “Which beverage causes the most erosion to your teeth?”
