Carol Ann Crouse

Carol Ann Crouse, a loving wife, mother, mother-in-law, grandmother, daughter and friend, passed away peacefully on Feb. 12, 2022, in Winston-Salem surrounded by her children and grandchildren. Born Jan. 6, 1938, in Pittsburgh, Pennsylvania, to Alex and Eva Ciechalski. Crouse attended St. Canice High School, the University of Pittsburgh and the University of North Carolina at Greensboro, where she earned a master’s degree in 1991. She then co-founded Cornerstone Counseling Associates where she worked as a licensed professional counselor through her retirement more than a decade later.

She met the love of her life, Richard Leo Crouse, when she was just 14 years old. They married on June 1,1957, and their love affair continued until Richard’s passing on Nov. 4, 2020, 64 years later. Just nine months following their wedding, Carol and Richard welcomed their first of four children, Eric, followed by Dawn, Marc and Todd. By the time she turned 27, Crouse was a busy mother to four beautiful children seven years old and younger. Crouse was a wonderful mother who ran a tight ship. Her children adored her until the very end and delighted in reminiscing about her loving but firm hand and the wisdom she imparted to them all.

In retirement, Carol and Richard enjoyed traveling together to destinations around the globe. They both enjoyed family gatherings, especially the quarterly Crouse birthday celebrations with their kids, spouses and grandkids. Most recently, Crouse’s daughter, Dawn, treated her to a wonderful “girl’s trip” to New York City in December, along with Crouse’s three daughters-in-law, whom she liked to tell everyone she had promoted to being her actual “daughters.”

Crouse was a beloved grandmother to David, Hannah, Dale (Brooke) and Cameron — children of Eric and Blair; Jason and Amy, children of Dawn and Joe Puente; Steven (Jessica), Michael and Megan, children of Marc and Cheryl; and Nicholas (Kristen) and Elizabeth, children of Todd and Melinda. Recently, Evan and Addilyn joined the family as the first great-grandchildren, and another, Bailey Grace, is due this July.

In addition to spending time with her family, Crouse loved gardening, playing bridge, solving crossword puzzles, knitting, walking and sharing a glass of wine with her cherished friends. She was a tenacious and spirited competitor in frequent family 500 Rummy games.

A funeral mass will be held at 11 a.m. on Saturday, March 26, at Our Lady of Mercy Catholic Church, 1730 Link Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be directed to Our Lady of Mercy School — Tuition Assistance, 1730 Link Road, Winston-Salem, NC 27103. Mabel Dunn Ritchie

Mabel Dunn Ritchie, 96, passed away peacefully on Feb. 16, 2022, in her home at Bermuda Village in Advance, surrounded by family members. She will be dearly missed by her surviving children, Dorothy Spath (Charles) of Mansfield, Massachusetts, Dr. Jack Ritchie (Chris) of Winston-Salem, Kenneth D. Ritchie (Christine) of Garden City, N.Y., and Stephen M. Ritchie (Lisa) of Charlotte. She also will be missed by her seven surviving grandchildren, Megan Mitchell (Elliot) of Washington, D.C., Claire Furr (Joshua) of Raleigh, Andrea Ritchie of Asheville, Brian Spath of Hartford, Connecticut, Kristin Gordon (Craig) of Attleboro, Massachusetts, Ken Ritchie of Tulsa, Oklahoma, and Kyle Ritchie of Garden City, N.Y. Also surviving are two loving sisters, Cathy Kiley of Garden City, N.Y. and Dorothy Dunn of the Grey Nuns of the Sacred Heart of Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, along with many nieces and nephews that were part of her extended family and provided her with much joy.

A New York native, Ritchie was born on June 27, 1925, in Queens, N.Y., to John and Mabel Dunn. Her life took her from her hometown in NYC to Albany N.Y., later to Florida, and eventually to N.C., prompted by her husband’s failing health. A truly brilliant mind, Ritchie started high school in NYC at age 11, and graduated from Queens College in NYC at age 19. She started her career in advertising at Dancer Fitzgerald in NYC. She married the love of her life, John F. Ritchie, in November of 1950. Ritchie then devoted the next phase of her life to raising, educating and cultivating a strong faith in her four children as members of St. Pius X Catholic Church and School. Ritchie had an engaging personality, and was known for her charm, grace and intellectual curiosity. This, combined with her interest in golf, tennis, and duplicate bridge, helped her meet and develop lifelong friendships. She enjoyed fostering these skills as a member of Wolferts Roost Country Club in Albany, N.Y. for 36 years, then later at the Plantation Country Club in Venice, Florida, and finally at Bermuda Run Country Club in Advance. Through her move to N.C., Ritchie found a strong new community — both at Bermuda Village and as a parishioner of Holy Family Catholic Church in Clemmons. She enjoyed spending her final years with new friends, playing rounds of golf into her 90s and played bridge to within months of her death. Ritchie’s family takes great comfort in the belief that Mabel and her husband are together again. They would also like to express their sincere appreciation to the special caregivers who provided a warm and caring environment for Ritchie over the past many months of her declining health. A funeral mass will be celebrated at Holy Family Catholic Church at 11 a.m. on Friday, Feb. 25, 2022. The family will receive visitors at a luncheon immediately following in the church’s Family Center. In lieu of flowers, donations can be made to Trellis Supportive Care (https://www.trellissupport.org), a hospice organization that was instrumental in facilitating care of Ritchie in her final days.
