Couriering Clemmons — What was happening in the area this week in 1992:

Harold E. Weiler was selected as the first full-time town manager for Lewisville. Weiler was chosen from a pool of four other candidates and had been the city manager for Harker Heights, Texas.

Weiler was a retired colonel in the U.S. Army and was eager to get started in his new job.

“I feel I have the qualifications Lewisville is looking for as I’ve been doing this kind of work in Texas,” Weiler said.

Weiler also said that Lewisville appealed to him and his wife, Delores, because of its proximity to their children and grandchildren, who were living in South Carolina, Pennsylvania and Arkansas at the time.

The Clemmons Appearance Commission approved the first sidewalk construction project for the village. The proposed sidewalk construction was located from Stadium Drive along Bingham Avenue to tie in with existing sidewalks at Clemmons Elementary School; south along James Street and east on Highway 158 to the Clemmons Library. Cost was estimated to be $14,000 for the 1,974-linear-feet project.

Cub Scout Pack 736 its their annual Pinewood Derby at the Clemmons Civic Club and had 51 participants. Kevin VanHoy took first place, Matthew Evans placed second, John Cleavenger finished third and Sean Halloran was fourth. Joshua Stone was the winning Tiger Cub.

The Jazz won a thrilling 68-66 game against the Rockets in the championship game of the Senior Boys Division for the Clemmons Cougars. Andrew Mayse scored a game-high 36 points in the come from behind win. Troy Hedrick scored 30 points for the Rockets.

West Forsyth’s Scott Danielsen finished second in the 100-yard freestyle and fifth in the 50-yard freestyle at the NCHSAA 4-A state swim meet. Tracey Glazener finished fifth in the 200-freestyle and Chad Zulegar was fifth in the 100-yard breaststroke.

Former Clemmons mayor Pat Sheppard announced her candidacy to run for election for the North Carolina House of Representatives for the 88th District. She served as mayor of Clemmons from 1987-1991.
