Operation Medicine Drop, creek/stream cleanup highlight activities

Forsyth Creek Week is coming back both in person for some events and virtually for other events, and is scheduled to run from March 19-27, taking place throughout the county. Forsyth Creek Week, which is now entering its 10th year, is an annual chance to celebrate our local waterways that helps people understand and appreciate the importance of our local waterways through fun and informative activities. The Village of Clemmons has been heavily involved with this event for the past nine years, and some popular activities from years past are returning again this year, such as Operation Medicine Drop and a new event as well.

Clemmons will kick off the event with its Clemmons Creek Week Cleanup, where groups can pre-register that are interested in working together to clean up creeks/streams in their neighborhoods over the weekend of Saturday, March 19, and Sunday March 20, or if they don’t live near a stream, Clemmons will assign you a road to clean up. Individuals and/or groups can pre-register online at clemmons.org/351/Clemmons-Community-Cleanup or with Clemmons Stormwater Department at 336-766-9170. Please have requests in by no later than 9 a.m. Friday, March 18, if you would like to participate. Requests received after that time unfortunately cannot be processed.

In a new event, Clemmons Stormwater is also partnering with the Town of Kernersville and the Town of Lewisville to provide a free live stake pickup event on Tuesday, March 22, and Wednesday, March 23. Kits will be available for pickup in either Kernersville or Clemmons. Participants must sign up to receive kits as there are limited supplies, and any walk ups who do not pre-register, will be turned away. Each participant will receive live stakes (woody cuttings) and instructions for how to plant along stream banks. People can sign up for a kit either through the Forsyth Creek Week’s website or on the Village of Clemmons webpage. Only 250 kits will be available at either location.

Operation Medicine Drop, always a huge hit in Clemmons, will be happening again from 10 a.m.-1 p.m. on Monday, March 21, at the Fire Station 14 on James Street, with cooperation from the Forsyth Sheriff’s Office. This event over the years has helped responsibly remove hundreds of pounds of unused and expired medications from households in the area. Only pills can be accepted, and this is for households only.
