Couriering Clemmons: What was happening in the area this week in 1992

The Clemmons Village Council held a public hearing about adding a fifth member to the town council but held off on voting on the matter until April 20. Councilman W.C. McGee introduced the resolution to change the village charter by adding a fifth member in order to break any tie votes. The Clemmons mayor had been the tie-breaking vote in the existing charter for the council.

The Lewisville Town Council voted to spend up to $6,780 for the construction of a stone, monument-style “Welcome to Lewisville” sign. It was recommended that the sign be placed at the Clemmons exit or the Lewisville exit off Highway 421.

Kate Fiedler, Jennie Ingram and Meredith McPherson, students at Clemmons Elementary, were all recognized for their outstanding essays by the Winston-Salem Forsyth County School system’s “Music in our Schools” month.

The West Forsyth boys basketball team lost to North Forsyth in the first round of the NCHSAA 4-A state tournament to end their season 14-12. The girls team, which beat Burlington Williams in the first round of the state tournament, lost to West Charlotte in the second round to finish with a 14-13 record.

Plans for the 25th annual Steeplechase were finalized and announced to take place on Saturday, May 9. The event will include the five horse races with a purse of $55,000, including $20,000 for the winning horse and jockey in the featured race. The festivities for the day also included a 5K Road Race, a fishing rodeo, a couples golf tournament, a tennis tournament, a concert and an area specially designed for children during the event.
