Janie Peterson, a senior at West Forsyth, was recognized as the Student of the Month by the Rotary Club of Clemmons for March.

Peterson is an excellent student with a GPA of 4.50 and ranks in the top 30 academically in a class of 540 students.

Peterson is a four-year member of the cross country and indoor and outdoor track teams, including being named all-city and all-county during her freshman and senior years. She is currently one of the team captains.

She has also been an active member of the Key Club all four years and currently serves as the treasurer. This year, she organized and delivered the Blessing Box collection (600+ items) throughout the Winston-Salem area. She is also a member of the West Forsyth Mindfulness & Meditation Club and served as a student government representative as a junior. She is the president of SGA this year. She also excels in several AP (advanced placement) courses.

Peterson has also been part of the school newspaper staff as a sports writer as a junior and sports editor as a senior. She has won third place and (two) honorable mentions in UNC statewide media contest.

She attended N.C. Governor’s School East (mathematics) as a junior and studied theories and proofs, created a cornerstone presentation on cryptography, and wrote for the N.C. Governor’s School East publication.

Peterson has also been playing the piano since first grade and has performed at assisted living facilities such as Bermuda Village and Trinity Elms. She has worked part-time at Publix and does some freelance writing for the Clemmons Courier.

She plans to attend UNC-Chapel Hill and study pre-med.

Comment from the school — “Janie is not only a friendly, considerate, bright student, but she also has the biggest heart of all the students at West. She is very active in cross country, the school newspaper, and other various organizations and she has time to organize and distribute food donations to many local blessing boxes. She does not do this as a requirement for a club, but out of the sheer love in her heart to help others.”

The Rotary Club of Clemmons congratulates Peterson for her accomplishments and contributions to her school and community.
