As school gets back into full swing, all the usual fall activities return to West; from weekly athletics to the upcoming school picture day to extracurriculars, there’s never a dull moment in the village.
The second week back on campus had the class meetings, each one of which took place with principal Kevin Spainhour and other administrators in the Performing Arts Center (PAC). The freshmen and sophomore meetings were held during first and second period on Tuesday, Sept. 6, and the junior and senior ones at the same times on Friday, Sept. 9. Each meeting featured a reinforcement of the new code of conduct and student behavior over the years by Spainhour, as well as a reminder to students about how to find their designated counselor and homerooms. Spainhour emphasized the importance of being able to attend a school as well-recognized as West, encouraging students to think of their Titan education as a “get to” experience, instead of a “have to” one.
School administrators also shifted daily schedules slightly, shortening class periods from 90 minutes to 89, and therefore giving students six-minute class transitions as opposed to the previous five. This new schedule went into effect on Sept. 6 and was changed in response to issues with the newly installed security keypads. These keypads were only put in on the “front” doors of each building, while the back doors remain locked at all times. Because of the building placements on campus, many students had previously relied on the back entrances to the building to get to class on time, and since the doors are no longer available, it forces students to sometimes walk farther to get to the front entrances. Luckily, West’s administration acknowledged the concerns, and added the extra minute of transition time, easily allowing all students to make it to class on time.
The week of Sept. 8 was not the best week for West’s athletics as a whole, but the Titans still battled hard. Girls varsity tennis fell to both Davie and R.J. Reynolds, varsity volleyball was taken down by Reagan, and boys varsity soccer tied with Lake Norman in their annual “Friday Night Fútbol” game, held this week because of the varsity football team’s bye week.
Extracurriculars get back into full swing next week, beginning with the annual Club Rush on Sept. 15, which is a way to get students, especially new freshmen, introduced to the different club opportunities on campus. Auditions for the fall plays, both the two one-act plays in October and the full length production in November, are also set for the upcoming week, and school photos are set to be taken on Sept. 13.
Every day is a good day to be a Titan, and with everyone finally getting used to the new school year, there’s something for everyone at the village.
