Despite the abridged school week, the Titans were still hard at work with voting of all different kinds. The first was for class representatives for Student Government Association (SGA). Students were asked to scan a QR code to vote for representatives for each class, freshmen through seniors, who they wanted to represent them. Election winners were announced at the end of the school day on Thursday, Sept. 29.
Voting for themes for Spirit Week, Oct. 10-14, also commenced this week with QR codes being posted around campus for students to vote on which themes they wanted for each day Monday through Thursday, with Friday being the usual “Green and Gold Day,” the day of Homecoming itself and the Homecoming football game versus Davie on Oct. 14. The Titans’ season is looking up, having won their away game at Glenn 28-21 on Thursday, Sept. 29, with the Reagan game Friday night and the East Forsyth game to close out the regular season on Oct. 28 will most likely be the toughest opponents West still has to face, though Davie and R.J. Reynolds (Oct. 21) are not to be overlooked. The Titans still must continue their winning ways if they want a chance of making the playoffs this year.
Other West Forsyth athletics were not to be forgotten this week either, with the girls varsity tennis team beating Reagan 8-1 on Sept. 26, before falling 6-3 in a tough match against Davie on Sept. 28. After being taken down by R.J. Reynolds 1-0 on Sept. 26, the boys varsity soccer team bounced back to take a 2-0 win over East Forsyth on Sept. 28. The varsity volleyball team also lost on Sept. 26, falling 3-1 to Northern Guilford, but came back to win both their other two matches of the week 3-0, against Parkland on Sept. 27 and Glenn on Sept. 29.
Hurricane Ian forced the first weather-related closure of the school year for the Titans and the WS/FCS district as a whole. As per an announcement by Principal Kevin Spainhour late in the day on Thursday, the surrounding counties had all closed school for virtual instruction before Forsyth County decided to close, and it was expected that in case of closure, all WS/FCS schools would go virtual as well. Only minutes after the announcement was made, chief communications officer Brent Campbell put out a call saying that the entire district would be fully closed for both students and staff on Friday, Sept. 30 due to the unsafe conditions.
The Titans return to campus this week to start off October with less than a month until the end of the first quarter.
