All throughout the week of Oct. 3, the village was abuzz with talk of the infamous rivalry set to kickoff under the lights last Friday night: West versus Reagan, the clash of the year, where the Titans had to bring their best on the road to continue their quest for the state playoffs after starting the season 0-4.
Since then, the Titans have won two straight games, knocking off Parkland and Glenn and were hoping to take down their bitter rival, the Reagan Raiders.
And although the outcome didn’t reflect those hopes, the Titans proved that a bad result doesn’t mean the game as a whole was bad. In fact, the resilience to get up and keep playing even when a missed field goal and failed two-point attempt left West entering the second quarter down 14-6 allowed the Titans to take a 25-21 lead over the Raiders going into the second half.
Really, it was many small mistakes that piled up to seemingly allow the Raiders to hand the Titans a 42-39 loss in the end. Despite intercepting a Reagan pass and returning a kickoff 97 yards for a touchdown in the third and fourth quarters, the fumble, interception, missed field goal, missed extra point and two failed two-point attempts the Titans recorded throughout the game cost them crucial points, and in the end, the victory.
Although the outcome of West’s football game for the week was less than ideal, other teams had great weeks. The boys varsity soccer team took down Mount Tabor 1-0 on Oct. 5, and the varsity volleyball team bounced back from a 3-0 loss to Reagan on Oct. 4 to beat Davie 3-0 two days later. The girls varsity golf team finished first in their final regular season conference match on Oct. 3 as well.
With Homecoming this week, the girls Powder Puff flag football game on Oct. 11 and the varsity football team’s matchup with Davie on Oct. 14 are hot topics among students this week. The annual Powder Puff game is making its return for the first time since 2019, where juniors and seniors square off against their classmates for a night of fun. Typically, juniors and seniors would face each other, but due to sharp increase in Powder Puff sign-ups this year, the field will be split in two and have the two games going on simultaneously.
If you haven’t already, there’s no better time to come out and support the Titan athletics than Homecoming week.
