The past week consisted of a whirlwind of activities in the village as the Titans geared up for their last few weeks of school before winter break. The winter sports teams continued their hard work, starting off with the varsity cheer team’s second place finish at the North Carolina State Championships. Both girls and boys varsity basketball took down North Forsyth on Dec. 6, the girls 29-19 and the boys 69-26. Unfortunately, both teams also fell to Mount Tabor on Dec. 9, the girls 46-35 and the boys 81-61, but the teams are hoping to bounce back in their games this week against Parkland and Glenn.
The varsity swim team also awaits a meet at R.J. Reynolds on Dec. 15, where they will face off with both the Demons and the Reagan Raiders.
Explore The Possibilities was also held at West on Dec. 5. It was a chance for all rising ninth graders to come and explore the different departments, electives and extracurriculars that the Titans have to offer, as well as for current West students involved in those classes or activities to show off the skills they’ve learned. It was a fun night for all.
An important note for all students is that the WS/FCS district has again changed their policy on exam exemptions. About a month ago, the district said that it would be returning to its pre-pandemic policy, which says that students with an A and five or fewer absences, a B and three or fewer absences or a C with no absences could be exempt from final teacher-made exams. The county has since gone back on this decision amid confusion over the decision being changed mid-year and a spike in illnesses such as COVID, flu and RSV and has released decided they will be continuing with the pandemic policy of ignoring absences and only using the posted student grade of a C or higher to determine exam exemption status.
West has also planned their first ever Holiday Spirit Week for the final week before winter break (Dec. 12-16), where both students and staff are encouraged to dress up and follow the themes. Monday is Holiday Hats and Socks Day, Tuesday is Holiday Explosion Day (everyone is asked to wear all red, green or white), Wednesday is Holiday Ugly Sweater Day, Thursday is Holiday Character or Theme Day and Friday is Holiday Flannel Day.
Let’s all bring our best and brightest holiday cheer to celebrate the final week before holiday break, Titans.
