The last full week before first semester exams was full of activity for the Titans. West athletics continued their success, with the boys varsity basketball team tallying wins over Reynolds 75-61 on Jan. 10 and Lee County 85-58 on Jan. 14. The girls varsity basketball team lost a close one with Reynolds 51-50 but bounced back to beat Atkins 37-21 on Jan. 14.
This past week also held auditions for the final theater production of the 2022-23 school year, the annual spring musical. This year, the production is “Bye Bye, Birdie,” and the auditions to be in the musical spanned throughout the week. Dance auditions were held for everyone on Jan. 9 and acting and singing auditions were held in after school time slots on Jan. 10 and 11. Callbacks for students who were being looked at for lead roles were held on Jan. 12 and the cast list was posted the next day. The show will star Nick Paugh as Albert, Laurel Chiesa as Rosie, Jonathan York as Conrad, Danielle Sanders as Kim, Sam Brandon as Mr. Macafee and Mariah Thomas as Mrs. Macafee, as well as a large cast of supporting characters and ensemble members. It’s set to be a great show and the actors will be hard at work until their performance days. Opening night is March 23 at 7 p.m., followed by another evening production on March 24 and a 2 p.m. matinee performance on March 25. Tickets will be $10 at the door, so make sure to find time in your schedule to come out and support West’s talented drama students this spring.
Despite all the controversy that has been swirling around the past few weeks about the possible schedule change for next year, a solution was finally settled on that most were very happy with. Previously, the WS/FCS Board of Education had stated that they were planning on changing the schedule from the current hybrid model to an either fully block schedule or a fully year-long seven period day schedule. A survey was sent out that allowed WS/FCS students, staff and parents to cast their votes and let their voices be heard. Although staying with the current schedule wasn’t even listed as an option that could be voted for on the survey, there was a section where you could add your personal comments and opinions.
According to the information that was released, the vast majority of people added comments about wanting to stay with the current hybrid schedule. This request was passed by a vote this week that will allow the schedule to stay the same at least for the 2023-24 school year, easing the minds of many students, staff and parents alike.
It’s time to buckle up and get ready for exams, Titans.
