Freshmen Olmedo, Magallanes eliminated in consolation rounds; boys team wrestling in regionals this weekend

The North Carolina High School Athletic Association (NCHSAA) in conjunction with the North Carolina Chapter of USA Wrestling, held the opening rounds of the 2023 Women’s Wrestling Invitational on Friday at RISE Indoor Sports. The event featured 16 wrestlers in each of the 12 weight divisions in a double elimination format.
Both of the West Forsyth wrestlers who qualified, Milagros Garcia Olmedo and Jadyn Magallanes, are freshmen.
Garcia Olmedo, wrestling in the 126-pound weight class, lost her opening match against Abby Carpenter of Franklin by pin at 1:44. Olmedo was eliminated in her first consolation match by pin against Maia Keleo de Miranda Sa.
Jadyn Magallanes won her opening match by decision over Victoria Shepherd of Jack Britt by a 7-6 decision but fell in the quarterfinals against Franchesca Morales by pin.
Magallanes was eliminated the second round of the consolation bracket by fall against Janden Holmes of Charlotte Olympic.
Beginning next year, girls wrestling will be a sanctioned sport by the NCHSAA. This was the first year that all-girls teams wrestled against each other.

The West Forsyth boys team will wrestle in the Midwest 4A Regional this weekend. The top four qualifiers in each weight class will qualify for next week’s NCHSAA 4A state championships.
