Kiwanis Club of Clemmons updates

At the May 2 meeting of the Kiwanis Club of Clemmons, Linda Lewis, associate executive director of The Shepherd’s Center of Greater Winston-Salem, was the featured speaker.

At the May 16 meeting, two Twin City Kiwanis Club members were among those in attendance.

The speaker was Ed Dean, operator of Cruise Planners. Member Thao spoke about her family’s experience coming from Vietnam. She also told the club about her business, Powerful Peace of Mind.

At the June 6 membership meeting, scholarship recipients Molly Jacobs and Brody MacDonald were awarded with the club’s annual scholarships. Both students attend West Forsyth High School.

The guest Speaker was Shannon Neal and Katie Cyre with Trellis Supportive Care.

The guest speaker for the June 20 meeting was Matthew Oliver with Liberty Hospice.

For the 2021-22 Kiwanis year, the club received a patch from the district for being a distinguished club. Michael Watson and Chris Billups also received pins for being a distinguished president and secretary.

Member Tony Rossi presented books to Morgan Elementary School for their book vending machine. Other books were donated for the summer reading program. Some members helped with supervising recess for an end-of-school teacher event.

The Blind Power Driving event is planned for Oct. 13 at the Winston-Salem Fairgrounds.

Chris Flynt made a presentation to Community Connections Leads on June 22 on his Blind Power Program.

A fundraising committee has been formed. Offering ad space in the club newsletter was discussed. Previous donations were reviewed. The largest donation has been to the Clemmons Library, ongoing scholarships and supporting Morgan Elementary School.

Jim Brosovic has volunteered to be grant coordinator. He will attend a training seminar soon.

The New Nomination Committee consists of Barbara, Ed and Steve.

There was a discussion to consider sponsoring the Bright Beginnings Program conducted by the YMCA. The club has participated in the past.

An outing to attend a Dash game with Big Brothers/Big Sisters was discussed.

Membership meetings for next month will be held on Aug. 1 and 15. The club will meet at the Trinity Elms Apartment Complex Activity Center at 7543 Fair Oaks Drive in Clemmons.
