CLEMMONS — The start of the 2023-24 school year is right around the corner, and the beginning of the school year events are coming up quickly.

First-year orientation will be held on Aug. 22 for all rising ninth graders and will include chances for students to meet their teachers for the year, explore West’s vast campus, walk their class schedule, and more. Breakfast and lunch will be provided for all students. The application for orientation is linked on the West Forsyth website’s home page.

The annual senior sunrise, where rising seniors are invited onto the football field early in the morning to watch the sunrise on their senior year, is also returning soon. The event will be held on Aug. 25 at 6:30 a.m., and all seniors are encouraged to attend and celebrate with their class. A parallel event, the senior sunset, will be held at the end of the school year for the class of 2024 as well.

Fall sports also kick back up soon, with the varsity football team playing their first game of the season tomorrow, Aug. 18, against A.C. Reynolds at home. The girls varsity volleyball team played their first game for the 2023-24 season on Aug. 15 against North Surrey on the road, and face off against Western Guilford tomorrow. The boys varsity soccer team faced Lake Norman on the road on Aug. 16 to start their season, and Mooresville at home yesterday, Aug. 16. They go head to head with Watauga on the road next on Aug. 21. The varsity field hockey team is also set to face their first opponent, Asheville, on Aug. 31. Come out and support your autumn sports teams.

Upperclassmen, don’t forget to finish any lingering summer homework for your AP classes. AP United States History, AP Chemistry, AP Language and Composition and AP Literature and Composition all have summer assignments linked on the West Forsyth website’s home page.

Seniors, remember that if you’d like to be considered for the Morehead-Cain scholarship at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, you must fill out a request form on the West Forsyth website. The form requires you to submit your resume and complete all the necessary information by Aug. 28. Good luck to all applicants.
