CLEMMONS — As of Sunday night, the West Forsyth baseball team was rolling through its early-season play.

This past week, West Forsyth played three Central Piedmont 4-A games against Davie County and Reynolds. The Davie County game was moved to last Monday night because of rain the previous week, and West Forsyth won 3-0 at home after defeating Davie County 10-0 in Mocksville on March 5. Jack Vest, the No. 1 starter for West Forsyth, picked up the win in the game last Monday.

“Anytime you can start 4-0 in the CPC, it’s great,” Coach Kevin McIntosh of West Forsyth said. “We played well against RJR coming off the big 3-0 win against Davie.”

West Forsyth then faced Reynolds this past Tuesday and Thursday. West Forsyth (5-1, 4-0) and swept the series against Reynolds – 8-0 at Reynolds this past Tuesday and 17-1 this past Thursday at West Forsyth. Pitchers Greyson Jones and Zane Culler pitched and those games and picked up wins.

In the first game, West Forsyth took a 1-0 lead after the first inning and added two more runs in the third. It tacked on single runs in the fourth, fifth and sixth innings. It also added two insurance runs in the ninth.

On Thursday, in the second game, West Forsyth exploded for 17 runs in the first inning.

It doesn’t get any easier for West Forsyth this week. It plays host to Reagan (9-0, 4-0) on Tuesday and is scheduled to play at Reagan on Friday. Also, on Thursday night, West Forsyth will play at Cornerstone Charter (5-0), which was an added non-conference game after games with Atkins and Oak Grove were rained out.

“This is a big week, and it’s only week four of the season,” McIntosh said. “Reagan has a lot of talent and is always well-coached, so it will be a fun week for us. This team has been working hard all year and ready for the challenge this week.”

Softball

It was a week of mixed results for the Titans.

West Forsyth routed Glenn 15-0 this past Tuesday night in a Central Piedmont 4-A game. It followed that the night after it defeated Montour (Pa.) 7-1 in a nonconference game. And this past Thursday, Reagan tripped West Forsyth 4-1 in a conference game.

In the Glenn (2-6, 2-2) game, West Forsyth scored seven runs in the first inning and added eight more in the bottom of the second, eventually winning with the mercy rule in the third inning.

Against Montour (0-2), West Forsyth scored one run in the third inning and tacked on four runs in the bottom of the fourth to pull away. West Forsyth added insurance runs in the fourth and fifth innings, and Montour scored its lone run in the seventh.

The following night against Reagan (5-2, 3-1), West Forsyth took a 1-0 lead in the fifth inning, but Reagan answered with four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead.

“We had two errors in that inning, one sac, and a fly ball. They ended up scoring four runs. We had a couple passed balls,” Coach Kevin Baity of the Titans said. “So, we sort of fell apart in that sixth inning. But (Reagan is) much improved. They have a really good pitcher, who’s a freshman, also. So, there’s going to be some battles over the next several years with our two freshman pitchers.”

West Forsyth has a brutal week of games scheduled this week. It was scheduled to have played at Davie County (4-3, 1-1) Tuesday night in a conference game, then at East Surry (1-2) on Wednesday in a nonconference game, and home against Central Davidson (3-2) on Thursday.

“Of course, Davie’s the big one,” Baity said. “That’s the one we need to win. We’ve put ourself in a position now if we’re going to contend for a conference we’ve got to win that one. And I’ll be honest with you, and I’m, I truly still believe that we should be the team to beat in the conference even though we lost to Reagan. I do believe that.”

Girls soccer

West Forsyth played just one game this past week, but it made the most of it.

Sophomore Milly Garcia Olmedo scored three goals and added an assist as visiting West Forsyth knocked off Mount Tabor 6-3 in a Central Piedmont 4-A game.

The Titans took a 4-1 lead at halftime, and both teams played even in the second half.

“I thought we played solid,” Coach Jeffrey Williams of West Forsyth said. “We finished our chances, and towards the end (we) gave up a couple goals to thin the margin out. But I thought we played overall, well.”

Aislynn Maguire added two goals for the Titans, and Audrey Peterson also scored.

Sloane Whalen led the Spartans (4-2, 0-1) with two goals and Harper Connolley chipped in with a goal.

“Just starting another part of our season that is more aligned with our goals for the year,” Williams said.

This week, West Forsyth was scheduled to play at Parkland (0-4, 0-1) on Monday night in a conference game, and on Wednesday, West Forsyth was scheduled to play host to Glenn (2-2-1, 1-0) in another conference game.

“Every week has its challenges,” Williams said. “And we’ll have our challenges this upcoming week, even though they may be different from this past week. And so, we look to get through with improving as a team this week, and hopefully injury-free and prepare for the next week.”

Girls lacrosse

West Forsyth continued its dominating ways this past week with Central Piedmont 4-A wins against Davie County and Reynolds.

In the Davie County game this past Tuesday, West Forsyth led 13-1 at halftime and continued to dominate the rest of the game, winning 22-3.

Alivia Gurley led the Titans with six goals, Bailey Fox and Tatum Snow added four, and Brighde Mullen, Gaby Vestal and Sara Gurley added two each.

Grace Butler led the War Eagles (2-3, 1-3) with two goals.

“Davie, they have a good team,” Coach Doug Brawley of West Forsyth said. “I mean, they’re very physical. They got some good ballhandlers. We just have more depth and we’re a little more athletic. You know, we’ve got some more experience, and that’s what allows us to excel in those games.”

In the Reynolds game this past Thursday, Snow led West Forsyth with four goals to help it win 15-8.

It was redemption for West Forsyth because Reynolds won both meetings last season – 12-11 and 9-8.

West Forsyth led 10-5 at halftime.

Alivia Gurley and Mullen added three goals apiece for the Titans, and Fox and Vestal scored two each.

“We played awesome. We played great,” Brawley said. “I mean, those girls, you really have to focus there because it’s such an emotional game that not only your physical abilities, your stick skills, your planning, mental planning for the game can go awry. But you can let them get in your head because you know Reynolds is not going to quit. They’re going to play until the end.”

West Forsyth (5-0, 4-0) was scheduled to play host to East Forsyth (3-3, 2-2) Tuesday night in a conference game. It also is scheduled to play at Mount Tabor (1-5, 1-5) Thursday night in a conference game, and it is also scheduled to play at Lake Norman (1-1) in a non-conference game.

“We focus one game at a time,” Brawley said. “The next game. That’s all we worry about. We don’t worry about who’s next. In this game on Tuesday, we have East Forsyth and that’s all we’re worried about.”

Boys lacrosse

It’s been a struggle through the early portion of the season for West Forsyth, and it wasn’t any easier this past week.

West Forsyth fell to 0-6 overall and 0-5 in the Central Piedmont 4-A after it lost 17-4 this past Tuesday at Davie County, and it lost 19-4 this past Thursday at Reynolds.

The Titans have been outscored 92-31 in the first six games of the season.

This coming week, West Forsyth has a conference game scheduled on Tuesday against East Forsyth (6-1, 3-1), and it’s also scheduled to play a conference road game on Thursday at Mount Tabor (1-5, 1-5). Mount Tabor’s lone win of the season came in the opening game when it defeated West Forsyth 11-4 in Clemmons.
