CLEMMONS — With spring break and the end of the third quarter right around the corner, the campus is abuzz with both students and staff hard at work.

Some recent initiatives of school administration strive to make the village a more welcoming and safe place for students to be educated. The roofs on many of the buildings at West have been due for renovation for a little while now, and construction has recently begun. The 900 and 200 buildings are the most recent ones getting revamped, and other buildings will follow, with the main cafeteria building, 600, set to be complete over the summer.

Recently, many teachers have also been asked to remove posters and wall hangings from their classrooms for repainting.

Eventually, every painted surface on campus will have a fresh new look. Students and staff are looking forward to these improvements in the coming months and school year.

With it now being about two years since the keypads were installed on the entrances to WS/FCS buildings, their original purpose still remains: to keep students inside classrooms safe.

Recently, however, students have been finding ways around putting their own codes into keypads and are spending time in buildings they aren’t supposed to be in, especially during third period and lunch times. To counteract this, West has decided to lock all buildings and disable keypads during these times so students are only in the designated areas they are supposed to be.

Meanwhile, West athletes have also been hard at work. The girls varsity soccer team topped their first conference opponent, Mount Tabor, 6-3 at home on March 13, and followed this with a 9-0 road win over Parkland on Monday. They also hosted Glenn last night and will host Reagan on March 25. The varsity baseball team beat R.J. Reynolds in back games last week, 8-0 on the road on March 12 and 17-1 at home on March 14. They face Reagan in the second of two back-to-back games tonight and will visit Cornerstone Charter tomorrow night. The varsity softball team went 2-1 last week, with home wins versus Glenn on March 12 and Montour on March 13, 15-0 and 7-1, respectively. They closed out the week with an unfortunate 4-1 loss at home to Reagan on March 14. The girls visited Davie on March 19 and East Surrey on March 20 and will host Central Davidson tonight.

Don’t forget that Thursday through Saturday are performances for the spring musical “Anastasia.” Shows start at 7 p.m., and tickets are $10 at the door.

Only one week left before spring break, Titans. Let’s make the most of this last week of third quarter.
