BERMUDA RUN — On April 25, members of the Bermuda Run Garden Club toured the Kernersville gardens of Will Ferrell to enjoy his vast collection of blooming azaleas and camellias. The gardens also include a variety of perennials, including ferns, hellebores, ivy and other ground covers. It was an eye-popping experience and a chance to learn about propagation of the plants. Ferrell is a local authority on gardening, having written extensively about his gardening experiences and speaking to many Master Gardner organizations and garden clubs in area counties.
The May meeting of our club was held at Elderberry Creek Farm and Nursery in Pfafftown. Owner James Helms taught about plants he raises, including several perennials that are less well known. He shared with the group the need to use native plants as well as ways to encourage the insect population. After his presentation the ladies were able to shop for plants. The business meeting was conducted after lunch at The Sherwood Restaurant.
May events wrapped up with the centerpiece committee, chaired by Peggy Schuppert, designing and creating 25 centerpieces for each table at the annual Crosby Scholars Invitational Golf Tournament breakfast held at Bermuda Run Country Club. The design included spider mums and ferns in a basket of golf balls with a red flag bearing the Crosby emblem. The committee also created a tall centerpiece for the check-in table where golfers were welcomed. Each one was a work of art.
