February in the village has been full of changes and developments to help West thrive. Second semester brings with it many responsibilities for returning students, including class registration and the process of meeting the required amount of credits. The Titans have also experienced a number of changes around the school this quarter, all serving to make campus a safer and more enjoyable place.

Class registration began at the start of the month, and students have until March 10 to finalize their schedules for the following school year. The Titans were given a registration form in their homeroom which their counselors will help them fill out. Starting on Feb. 10, counselors began to pull their students out of their math period classes in order to discuss which classes will be best for them in their next step of high school. Students also have the option to register for Forsyth Tech or Career Center courses, providing the opportunity for various high level classes that aren’t available at West. Although choosing the right classes may feel like a lot of pressure, the team in the Student Services office is there to assist students and guide them throughout the entire process.

Developments have been made to the new Opengate Safe Entry metal detection process which has allowed the system to be as effective as it can be. When working with an open campus without a designated main entrance, it’s tricky to determine who has gone through the screenings without the proof of wristbands as used in previous years. After feedback from students, the screenings are now regulated with the presence of tickets, which each student must get after walking through the detectors. The tickets must then be shown before they are able to enter their first period building, and they are later collected by teachers to be reused for days down the line. This system has proven to be the most efficient when dealing with such a large campus, as it ensures that every student who has a first period at West will go through the screenings, contributing to keeping the school safe.

Another change that has been brought to the table is the inclusion of a new lunch line in the cafeteria, bringing a different food to the Titans nearly every day. This new line holds the name “The Road Trip” line, as it is meant to explore and serve meals from different cultures and places around the world. The line is a replacement for the previous chicken sandwich line, which will still be served but not as frequently. The new line has received a generally positive response as students have been enjoying the various foods, ranging all the way from tacos to breakfast food. The variety in dining gives students even more options of what to eat each day.

Although many changes have been made that require adjusting, the student and staff population have been thriving with the developments on campus. Switching things up every once in a while allows for the growth of the school and makes changes for the best of the students. As February continues, so will these processes, carrying West strongly towards the spring season.
