Couriering this area this week in 1981 — 40 years ago: Felix Hege was just 12 years old when he joined the Boy Scouts of America. Now at 69, Hege joined four men from the northwest North Carolina area to receive the Silver Beaver Award, the highest honor presented by the National Council of the Boy Scouts of America to local council volunteers.  

Mona Hanes, a professional actress, will play the lead as Annie Oakley in the coming Little Theatre of Winston-Salem musical, “Annie Get Your Gun.” She is a graduate of the N.C. School of the Arts and UNC-G, and is the daughter of Travis and Evva Hanes of Freidburg Road near Clemmons.

Mrs. Mary Snow of Clemmons celebrated her birthday last week at her home. Present at the party were here daughter, and son-in-law, Mr. and Mrs. Norris Cromer of Winston-Salem; the Cromers’ sons, Baxter and Barry, and Miss Millie Highfill, also of Winston-Salem; and Mrs. Snow’s daughter, Becky Beck, and her son, John. The family enjoyed a delicious dinner and presented Mrs. Snow with gifts for the occasion.

Kelly Robin Lemon, a Meredith College student and daughter of Mr. and Mrs. Denver H. Lennon of Lewisville, is a member of this year’s Aqua Angels, the synchronized swim team at Meredith. Miss Lennon, a junior, is majoring in religion and mathematics.

Mrs. Wayne Coley, of Shallowford Road, was hostess for last week’s meeting of the Sharon Extension Club. Sixteen members were present with two new ladies attending. Tina Darnell presented a program on health aids and Mrs. Erma Watkins and Mrs. Hazel Potts gave lessons in lap quilting.

David Moffitt and Lachelle Via from Clemmons are among 14 students from junior and senior high schools in the Piedmont area whose works were selected for special awards in the 1981 Scholastic Art Awards Program. Both are students at Southwest Forsyth Junior High School.

The West Forsyth Titans varsity basketball team has extended a five-game winning streak into the District 7 semi-finals. At last, Coach Cloud can brag about having some luck, things like James Edrington’s amazing half-court basket Monday night as West leaped on High Point Andrews for a 71-64 victory.
