The Greater Winston-Salem Chamber of Commerce West Area Council presented its March Teacher and Student of the Month awards March 15. The recipients were Lavonne Cooper, a sixth-grade teacher at Kennedy Middle School and Fulton McSwain, a sixth-grade student. The awards were presented in the council’s breakfast meeting in Clemmons. Fulton McSwain is the son of Yvonne and Fulton McSwain. He is on the honor roll at Kennedy, a student council representative and a member of the youth choir at Zion Church in Lewisville.

Brooke Venable, a junior at West Forsyth High School, has been selected in the 1990 Miss N.C. U.S. Teen Pageant, on April 7 at the Sheraton Hotel in Greensboro. Venable is the daughter of Cliff and Verlene Venable of Clemmons.

There will be a West Forsyth Family YMCA. Fund-raising personnel involved with the project have announced the efforts to date have been successful enough to go ahead with plans to exercise the option on the 15-acre site on Peace Haven and proceed with the plans to build the new Y branch. Ron Willard, chairman of the board of managers, said he’s pleased with the way momentum has picked up in the past few weeks. “We are definitely going to have a Y in this area. We have the money to build a basic Y, but we want to do better than that and build the kind of facility the people out here really want,”

In the first 25 years of West Forsyth’s history, only one N.C. State Caldwell Scholar walked through the school’s halls. This year, two students received this prestigious scholarship — Mike Parker and Nicole Schramm. Each student will be awarded this scholarship, which is worth $15,000 over a four-year period.

West Forsyth football players Mike Eckenroth and Todd Beatty recently signed athletic grants-in-aid with Mars Hill College in Mars Hill. Eckenroth and Beatty, two key lineman for West last season, are expected to help the Lions on the offensive line for years to come.

Thomas Long Jr. was sworn in as Clemmons town manager last Thursday, following a split voter by the council. Mayor Pat Sheppard, who votes only in case with a tie vote, voted yes, along with Councilmen Warren Kasper and Bill Tschopp.  Councilmen Bob Cusdill and Nat Swanson voted against Long’s appointment.
