Navy Ensign Daniel B. Sowder, son of Jane and Eric D. Sowder of Clemmons, recently graduated from the United States Naval Academy in Annapolis, Maryland, and was commissioned to his present rank in the U.S. Navy. A 1997 graduate of West Forsyth High School, Sowder completed four years of intensive study and received a bachelor of science degree in aerospace engineering.

BB&T has promoted Debbie Gordon to assistant vice-president. Gordon, who joined the bank in 1996, is a benefits administrator based in Winston-Salem. She resides in Lewisville and has two sons, Matt, 16 and Ryan, 15.

Jeffrey “Pitsy” Shore, the precious pet and loving companion of Howard and Dena Shore of Clemmons, died on June 16 at his home. He was a red toy poodle born in 1984 and was 16 and a half years old. Pitsy was well known in Clemmons and had many special friends at Wachovia Bank who always had a red lollipop waiting for him. He enjoyed going through the drive-thrus at Wendy’s and McDonalds and had many friends at the Clemmons Post Office.

Great coaches, a good school and an excellent opportunity to play as a freshman. When former West Forsyth High School point guard C.J. Paul added everything up, choosing to play his college basketball at Hampton University was a no-brainer. Paul, who had also considered playing at Virginia Tech, officially announced his decision to sign with Hampton earlier this month.

Micah Smith had a tremendous individual meet but it was Brookwood’s boys and girls 8-and-under medley relay teams that ultimately delivered the deciding blows for the Barracudas in last week’s Greater Winston-Salem Swimming Championships. Brookwood, which owned the lead throughout the meet, finished with 343 points. Smith won three boys 8-and-under events.

For most of us, vacation time means heading to the beach and finding a nice spot in the sand to kick back and relax. Not so for a group of local residents. Some 110 people from Clemmons First Baptist Church packed their work clothes last week and headed to Cumberland, Kentucky, for a week of hard work. The church group is taking part in Mountain Outreach, a home building effort sponsored by Cumberland College.
