James Edwin Messick, Jr. 

October 2, 1931 – July 31, 2014 

James Edwin Messick, Jr. “Jim”, 82, of Lewisville, NC, died July 31, 2014, at Novant Medical Center, Winston- Salem, NC. Jim was born Oct. 2, 1931 at Baptist Hospital, Winston-Salem, NC to James E. Messick, Sr. and Rachel Smitherman Hurley Messick. Jim lived his entire life in Forsyth County. He graduated from R. J. Reynolds High School and Gardner-Webb College. While attending James A. Gray High School he met his future wife, Florence Jean Miller. They were married on June 5, 1956 at Trinity Moravian Church. They have spent the last 36 years residing at their home in Lewisville, NC. He spent 42 years working for the family business as a wholesale grocery buyer for J.G. Messick & Sons, parent company of Food Fair of NC. Jim was a loving husband, father, brother, and uncle. He was a solid Christian who loved the Lord and has now gone home to his reward in heaven. Jim was raised in Ardmore Baptist Church, was a faithful and active member of Covenant Presbyterian Church for 40 years, where he was an active member of the Men of the Church, the Men’s Sunday school class, served on the Board of Deacons for many terms where he was also a chairman and was an ordained Elder. The last 18 years he has been a member of Concord United Methodist Church. Jim was an inactive member of the West Forsyth Camp of Gideons International. For many years he enjoyed working on the Wednesday Crew at Habitat for Humanity. Preceding him in death were his parents, a brother John Frank Messick, and a loving granddaughter, Christina Frances Warren Messick. Survivors include his wife, Jean; daughters, Jean Elizabeth Messick Seymour (Al) of Clemmons, and Rachel Ellen Messick Tiscareno (Juan) of Lewisville; son James E. Messick, III of Kernersville; granddaughters, Florence Isabel Tiscareno and Margaret Jean Tiscareno, both of Anaheim, California; one brother, Richard Garfield Messick of Winston-Salem, and many nieces and nephews. Jim will be sorely missed. Funeral services were held at Hayworth- Miller Funeral Chapel, 6685 Shallowford Road, Lewisville, NC, Monday, August 4, 2014. A graveside service followed at Forsyth Memorial Park. In lieu of flowers, contributions may be made to West Forsyth Camp of Gideons, Int., P.O. Box 21 Lewisville, NC, 27023 or Concord United Methodist Church, 8955 Concord Church Road, Lewisville, NC 27023, or a charity of the donor’s choice. The family wishes to thank their friends and family who have been so supportive during Jim’s illness and the doctors and nurses at Novant Medical Center and the Select Care who cared for him.
