James Hayes Church

Mr. James Hayes Church, 90, of Clemmons, passed away on October 4, 2016, at The Crest of Clemmons. Hayes was born on June 10, 1926, in Ashe Co., NC to James Dixon Church and Annie Belle Cheek Church. He proudly served in the U.S. Army during WWII. Following his service, he was employed by Pilot Freight for 12 years. He was elected Business Agent for Teamsters Local 391, retiring as Vice President in 1987. He was a Mason and Shriner with membership at Salem Lodge for 50 years. He was a people-person who had many friends. He enjoyed his retirement, particularly his home in the mountains. More than anything, Hayes was devoted to his wife and family. In addition to his parents, he was preceded in death by his first wife, Joyce Church, and 7 siblings. He is survived by his loving wife of 24 years, Linda A. Church; children, Lynne Patrick (Pat), J.C. Church (Lynn), Lillie Crews (Danny), Phillip Church (Gena), Randall S. Newton (Lori); 10 grandchildren and 10 great grandchildren; a sister, Devola Wood; and numerous nieces and nephews. A funeral service will be conducted at 2:00 p.m. Friday October 7, 2016, at Clemmons First Baptist Church with Rev. Scott Hammett officiating. Interment will follow at Westlawn Gardens of Memory. The family will receive friends from 6 – 8 p.m. Thursday, October 6, 2016, at Hayworth-Miller Silas Creek Chapel. In lieu of flowers, memorials may be made to Office of Development, Shriners Hospitals for Children, 2900 Rocky Point Dr., Tampa, FL 33607, or Kate B. Reynolds Hospice Home, 101 Hospice Ln., Winston-Salem, NC 27103.
